We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Courtland Butler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Courtland , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
As a classroom teacher, and tennis/basketball coach, I learned some valuable lessons. I learned that jobs that serve others are the absolute best jobs in the world, but they also can easily take up all of your time. A lot of my life this past year felt like I went to work and came home, and although it was awesome, I experienced a ton of fatigue and burnout, and building We Are Dream Chasers often went on the back burner. I had three things in my life that I wanted to be great at, but service based things all need a ton of time put in to be great at them. I’ve learned that fatigue and burnout can burden you if you don’t work life balance, but I think the best way to live is to live a life of continual service.
The only way to do this based on everything I’ve learned is through God. I was living my life to try and be a great teacher, a great coach, and a great podcaster, but my priority should have been to be of great service to God. If I seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, God will guide me in the right direction and I will use all of my avenues of work to both spread the Word of God and be an example of what God’s love and light does for us. If I let God guide my life, my strength will be renewed and I’ll be able to make it through storms like fatigue and burnout with both joy and peace which come from God. So I’m going to keep serving others, because there is no other way to spend our time, especially when so many people need help spiritually and physically. I want to help as many of those people as possible. If any has questions about God’s word because I know there are a lot of ideas out there and it’s easy to not know what to believe, feel free to email me at courtlandbutler27@gmail.com and we can set up a bible study, because where else can we get answers except from the book itself.
Courtland , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey! I am the host of the “We Are Dream Chasers!” podcast. Our mission is to TELL the World. TELL stands for Teach, Encourage, Love, and Light Up The World. Through four different shows and an Instagram singing group called TELL the World, we aim to encourage people to chase their dreams and grow from that process, as guests on the show give their best advice and lessons learned, and through music we spread positive and loving messages.
Most importantly We Are Dream Chasers believes in Christian Values, as my personal biggest mission in life is to spread the word of God and showings God’s Love and Light through how I live as a Christian. Our values and our high quality interview questions are what I believe make us stand out the most. Our questions are research-based, value and interest driven, and thought provoking. The guests tend to feel comfortable and and passionate about what they are talking about, which makes for great episodes and conversations. I started this show during the pandemic because I was lonely and bored, but it has turned into a brand that I hope will serve and help so many people throughout our journey!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
One of the most rewarding parts of podcasting and building this brand is that I get to talk to and learn from the most amazing people. It’s truly an honor just to be in the same room or same zoom call as people trying to do big things. Now the absolute most rewarding part though, is that my brand has the potential to help people who are struggling, need guidance, need examples, and more. Even if I were to only help a few people, it would all be worth it.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think people fail to understand why we spend so much time building things and creating content that could possibly not reach many people and that takes a ton of time effort before you even start making money. I think that sometimes even creatives ask themselves this question, because I know I have. So why do I do it? What have my podcast guests said is there why? It’s because of the passion and love we have for it, matched with a greater mission. That mission is different for others, but if what you do has a mission of service, and it’s bigger than just how you can help yourself out, that’s what makes us keep coming back. I come back for my listeners and for my guests, not just for me. I truly just want to serve others, and give them the best advice possible for what they are trying to do in life.
