We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cory Shubert a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cory, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
As a small, one person business, it seemed natural to name my company me! I started out as Cory Shubert Photography but over time and with my growth in other areas, ie. web and video, I ended up changing it to Shubert Media. This seemed to encompass more of what I was doing on a yearly basis and didn’t pigeon hole me into just photography.
Cory, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started like many with a dream of being a photographer. The ability to shoot everyday and have my own business back in 1983. While I was able to do ok, I was never able to live on it and so I started looking for roles in a company taking photographs. Over the next 20 years, that is what I did. It didn’t matter to me that my name wasn’t on the door, what was important was that I was doing creative work and I was able to pay our bills and raise a family. When my corporate career days were over, I went back into the freelance world and was now able to support my family of two, kids were grown and out of the house, in a way that was workable. I jumped back into feature film work again, traveled all over the country shooting video of conferences, and then landed a contract role at Adobe, you know, the ones that sell Photoshop? Currently, I am on contract with the Adobe Photoshop prerelease team and if that turns into a full time role, I will have bounce back into corporate America again, that is pretty cool.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I worked for 13 years at a travel company as a social media producer, shooting video and photos for social media needs all over the world. When this company was sold, I was out of a job. I freelanced until I landed another corporate role where I created a full photo studio with three shooting bays, a fully closed-loop shooting process of 1000’s of product shots a year as well as a video kitchen studio set where I created training videos. After three years, my role was canceled due to budget cuts, so it was back to the freelance world. I worked on a few feature films, shoot videos and photos for past clients as well as some new ones, then I landed the contract role at Adobe where I am now.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal in my whole work world was first and foremost, to support my wife and kids. I am the main breadwinner, and I fully accept this role, but in that I had to adjust what I did in order to do this. I have always found a way to stay creative, trying new things like field recording for stock libraries, shooting funerals during COVID to be able to maintain some income and even taking pt jobs like delivering pizzas when things were slow. The goal never changed, but how and what I did to keep reaching it did, that is what life is about.
