We were lucky to catch up with Cory Lucas recently and have shared our conversation below.
Cory, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I fell in love with medicine in 2007 when I enlisted in the United States Army and decided to become a Army Combat Medic. My career in the Army was cut short with injuries, but after recovering, I was able to start as an Emergency Medicine Technician in Virginia. I then used my GI bill benefits to attend nursing school, completed 2 associates degrees, 1 bachelors degree, and 1/2 of my Master’s Degree as a Nurse Practitioner with the 4 years of benefits awarded by the VA.
I worked for 6 years as an Emergency Medicine Registered Nurse before starting to work as an Emergency Medicine Nurse Practitioner. Initially certified as a Family Practice Nurse Practitioner I went back and completed a second board certification in Emergency Medicine.
While working in hospitals across northern virginia, I had many interactions with a countless number of patients who I felt could have avoided expensive ER visits if they only had access to quality primary care. Furthermore patients that were uninsured or underinsured were receiving bills for tens of thousands of dollars that would have cost less than 10% of that cost if they had a quality primary care and or urgent care to followup with. Even patients with “good insurance” were struggling to get follow up appointments with their primary care for 6-8 weeks after their ER visit due to lack of available doctors and appointments.
After moving to Florida in 2022. I witnessed the impersonal and rushed experiences of primary care while attending appointments for my own wife and children. Working local Emergency Medicine at 2 local area hospitals in Florida reconfirmed my fear, that access to quality and personalized primary care in this area was not available for my patients. After being prompted by several patients in the Emergency Room, and encouraged by staff nurses, I decided to open Mosaic Medicine, PLLC as the alternative to corporate medicine. Offering small patient panels that allow our practice to never rush appointments, offer same day and next day sick appointments, and offer an integrative, and balanced approach to medicine with more focus on preventive health than waiting until patients are sick.
Cory, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We provider Executive Primary Care and Wellness services in an integrative model. We specialize in in-depth, hands-on, primary care with a focus on preventing disease and illness. We subspecialize in Medical Weight loss and involve a clinical nutritionist for out patients. We also specialist in Intravenous Vitamin Infusions, and executive Men’s Health and Testosterone Optimization with a focus on Health Span.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Mosaic Medicine, PLLC first opened its doors with the intent of becoming credentialed with several major insurance carriers, namely Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Tricare. Credentialing with health insurance companies is important for a new medical practice to ensure an adequate stream of new patients. However, commercial insurance companies in Florida are highly restrictive against clinical practice for Autonomous Nurse Practitioners. No commercial insurance company in the state of Florida since opening in February of 2022 has allowed me to join their patient panel. Even in the instance of filing appeals on my patients behalf, and with patients needing urgent medical care, both major large insurance groups told me that having patients wait 6-8 weeks for a followup appointment was the “norm” and that it is was a reason for them to consider opening their panel to Mosaic Medicine.
Nonetheless, Mosaic Medicine was committed to treating our patients like we would expect our own family to be treated when they went to a doctors office. And with this commitment, Mosaic Medicine has continued to grow and flourish as a Direct Primary Care practice, where patients have access to high quality, personalized, and individualized attention for an all-inclusive membership starting at $125/month. Gone are the days of having to spend thousands of dollars per month for concierge medical care.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My patient’s are not just looking for a “doctor” to tell them what to do. They are looking for an “advocate” someone they trust to always be looking out for their best interest. They value the relationship with me, as much as I value my relationship with them. Each patient encounter is like a 2-person team sporting event. There is never a 1 size fits all approach to patient care, each situation is unique. That is why having a small patient panel is so important. It allows me to spend more quality time with patients, creating individualized treatment programs specific to each patient. Patient’s know that when they come to Mosaic Medicine they are going to be treated as a unique and valuable person, and not as a number.
