We recently connected with Cory Cash and have shared our conversation below.
Cory , appreciate you joining us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
I started a podcast, called Black Is The New Rich during the pandemic. As we all know, during this time, we barely could do anything at all. I was already a full-time photographer and videographer, and everything about work came to an end.. during this time, I had a lot of time to think and reflect about where my life is going. I knew I needed a change. I was a nude photographer prior to the pandemic for the last four years although I was very good at it, I felt there was a lack of purpose.. BLACK IS THE NEW RICH, the Podcast started from a tragic incident that happened to the late George Floyd. Seeing his murder on national television struck a nerve that I could no longer ignore. For me protesting in the streets just wasn’t my style. I don’t know anyone that did but it just wasn’t me. I wanted to be more involved in my community I want to make more of an impact. So I thought. What better way to teach the community, financial literacy mindset growth, and entrepreneurship through the realm of a podcast. At the time I deem my self financially illiterate, so I thought this idea was a win-win, because I was essentially getting free coaching from experts and teaching a community at the same time. This was a Learning Prayer for me because I was so used to being behind the camera and ask my clothes people know I’m very introverted so being in front of the camera was terrifying. I loved that a new challenge, a new competition and since then I’ve been going at it nonstop.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’m also a full-time Content creator so I love this question. If you’re looking to build an audience on social media, you have to be constantly solving a problem for your target audience.. always always always make sure that you’re giving value and not just selling. I have a general rule of thumb about when you’re posting if they can’t save it or share it then don’t post it. Be honest with yourself it’ll make you a better content creator.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
So at the year mark of me doing BLACK IS THE NEW RICH I had to make a little bit of a pivot by opening up the dialogue of the conversations that I was having. Financial literacy was cool and definitely needed. However, with financial literacy there’s not much opinions that come with it. It’s a lot of fact based information I decided to create more every day life conversations that can help people so that the audience can be more engaged.
