We were lucky to catch up with Cory Borgen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Cory thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, one thing many business owners consider is donating a percentage of sales or profits to an organization or cause. We’d love to hear your thoughts and the story behind how and why you chose the cause or organization you donate to.
We donate 1% of all sales on our website to non-profits with a music related mission. Customers can also recommend other organizations to us that we’re not currently working with in order to expand our network.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started my eCommerce company about 6 years ago in order to serve musicians everywhere. I play a few instruments myself, mainly guitar now, and I always wanted to start a music store. It never really made financial sense to start a brick and mortar music store, but I came up with the idea to run this eCommerce company when I was working for an eCommerce company in a different industry. I basically took that business model I learned from that company and implemented it in an industry that I love!

We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
We sell on both our own site and other marketplace sites like Amazon, Ebay, and Reverb. The marketplace sites have been a great source to gain new customers and introduce people to our brand. The fees aren’t great and they’re not really our customers that we can market to, so we offer incentives on our own website so that once people hear about us they will want to do business on our site in the future.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
I try really hard to not micromanage people or push too hard for ultimate efficiency. Instead of trying to squeeze every ounce of productivity out of our team today, I treat them how I’d want to be treated and give them the space they need to manage their time. We touch base on a weekly basis, so they still have to produce, but they don’t have anyone breathing down their neck every day. We have 6 people that work with us currently and we have never had anyone quit in the 6 years we’ve been in business!
