We were lucky to catch up with Corwin and Anna Blackwell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Corwin and Anna, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
To begin, our primary service we offer is muraling and the only way we truly learned this craft was by getting out there and completing our first piece. While having backgrounds in art helped with the design, painting our first mural gave us the confidence to create, and keep creating, more. It also taught us valuable lessons on being Muralists as well as tricks and techniques needed in order to construct any piece.
Moreover, the biggest aspect we found that speeds up the process is the type of paint you’re using to create your mural. Our very first mural, The Dinky Line, was painted using majorly exterior paint with paint brushes and a very small portion was finished with spray paint. However, this very small section is what made us realize spray paint was the way to go, allowing us to create murals in a fraction of the time. Starting with our second piece, we have only used spray paint and can’t imagine going back.
Furthermore, some of the most essential skills we found include, but aren’t limited to, proper hand movement, appropriate painting distance from the wall to your nozzle, patience while spray painting in order to ensure precision, using tools, such as projectors and stencils, to further obtain artistic accuracy, and planning out how to exactly paint your mural (i.e. what section needs to be completed first and last).
Lastly, we believe the main obstacle that stands in our way of learning further is ourselves. As humans, we have preconceived limitations that are often incorrect, causing us to stay within our comfort zones rather than venture beyond our thoughts. However, we have found that outside of these zones are where we learned the most and where our skills form. Our biggest advice is to not be afraid to step outside and try something new.
Corwin and Anna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We are Blackwell Art, an artistic husband and wife duo that focuses on the production of murals for multiple businesses and individuals. We also offer graphic design and illustrative work for the same demographic. Our hope is to make as many businesses, places, and homes beautiful as we can while giving our clients something they can cherish daily.
We got into our industry by first moving to an open minded area that welcomed and celebrated public art. Then, it was a matter of networking and gathering as many connections as possible. Networking, mixed with our artistry, is the root to obtaining each finished project.
We believe that our wide array of services is what sets us apart from others. We also offer multiple styles of art, rather than having a set style, allowing us to work on a range of projects without limitations.
We are most proud of our ability to learn the trade quickly, the number of close connections we have formed throughout our community, and the amount of projects we have been so fortunate to complete. For our potential clients, we would like you to know that we pride ourselves on our ability to construct a mural you’ll love and value each day and hope to work with you soon.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In our view, the most important thing society can do to support creatives is keeping an open mind and allowing more art to be created in public spaces. Artists shouldn’t have to lock their gifts away or be limited to what they can achieve by outdated rules and regulations. All in all, the more accepting a community is on art, the more beautiful it will become.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
We don’t have a specific end goal for our creative journey. Rather, what drives us is the ability to learn more skills, push ourselves past what we think we know and can achieve, and to simply paint as mush as possible. We love our creative side and want to express it anywhere we can while advantageously collaborating with various clients.
