Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cortlin Barrow. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cortlin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
My inclination towards a creative and artistic path solidified during my middle school years. I vividly recall spending around 8 hours meticulously crafting a drawing comprised solely of intersecting lines, ultimately spelling out a part of my name. I sought validation from my brother, asking what one might call a person unable to replicate their own creation. His response, “There’s no such thing, but if you ever do find that, you’ll know,” left me perplexed yet stuck in my mind.
This seemingly enigmatic notion lingered as I navigated through high school. Then, in my third year, during a career day event, a location manager from the film “Act of Valor” was invited to share insights about the industry. While my peers asked general questions, I was drawn to inquire about his involvement in “Act of Valor.” His willingness to show me the intricacies of behind the scenes work left me awestruck and speechless.
It was on that day that my passion for the film industry ignited, despite my limited understanding of the specific roles within a film production at the time. The experience crystallized my desire to be part of the creative world of filmmaking, propelling me towards a career where I could contribute my artistic vision within this captivating realm.

Cortlin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As an American Cinematographer based in city of Los Angeles, my journey in the film industry spans over 8 immersive years. What sets me apart is not just my experience but my approach to capturing stories on screen.
My venture into filmmaking began in my formative years, a passion I pursued early on and ardently developed. The decision to forgo traditional education came after a serendipitous encounter with industry professionals, notably a conversation with a location manager from “Act of Valor.” This pivotal moment inspired me to leap into the film industry straight out of high school, setting the stage for an enriching and unconventional path.
Embarking on my career, I initially delved into shooting mini-documentaries for a prominent 7on7 football team, eventually shifting my focus towards narrative projects. I commenced by reaching out to industry peers via social media, igniting my journey in student and indie productions as a Production Assistant and Grip. My maiden experience on a crime short film was nothing short of exhilarating, an environment where I grasped the intricacies of rigging, equipment terminology, and forged invaluable friendships.
Joining a main crew as a Grip and Electrician opened doors to a spectrum of projects spanning films, music videos, and commercials. Evolving into a full-time Gaffer and part-time Cinematographer, I honed my craft in various short films and music videos. It was around 2020 that I made the conscious leap into the role of a full-time Cinematographer, a transition that posed challenges as I pivoted from my established identity as a Gaffer.
What distinguishes my work is my commitment to authenticity in storytelling through cinematography. When composing a shot, my aim is to immerse the audience in the character’s world, capturing the essence of the scene with a focus on realism. I believe that unless the narrative explicitly demands it, unconventional angles can distract from the story’s authenticity.
Reflecting on the work I cherish most, it becomes evident how deeply I immerse myself in the story and performances. Collaborating with directors who trust my vision and provide the creative space to bring their narratives to life has been a driving force. I am drawn to character-based, humanist stories and seek to work with directors who understand my role as more than just a creator of visually stunning scenes but as someone who comprehends and embodies the worlds presented.
Moving forward, my passion lies in continuing to collaborate with directors who share a dedication to authentic storytelling, delving into the depth and complexity of characters and narratives, while continuing to evolve as a storyteller in this ever-evolving tapestry of life. “Filmmaking is a chance to live many lifetimes. That’s a guiding principle that fuels my creative journey.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a cinematographer is the capacity to convey profound messages through the lens, translating words into powerful visual poetry. Each frame I capture is a piece of a larger puzzle, contributing to the emotional resonance of the story. The most rewarding moments come when I see the impact of my work, when audiences are moved, provoked, and transported into the depths of a story’s intricacies, empathizing with the characters’ journeys.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
In essence, my mission is to be a conduit for the emotional and human aspects of storytelling, using the language of visuals to create an immersive experience that resonates universally. I aspire to inspire, to move hearts, and to engage minds, ultimately leaving an enduring impact through the art of cinematography.
