We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Corry Rogers. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Corry below.
Corry, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I took a risk at quitting my job and pursuing my career as a full time Artist. I was a Police Officer and I was miserable. The job impacted my physical health. I had a major back surgery as a result of an on the job injury. Additionally, my mental health was declining because I was unhappy. I used to paint on the side, with hopes of eventually being able to pursue my art fulltime. However, long work hours made it very difficult to complete any artwork. I expressed my desire to paint and how unhappy I was at work to my wife almost daily and she encouraged me to resign, but I was afraid. So much doubt went through my mind; What if I fail? What if I don’t make any money? How am I going to support my family? My wife was pregnant at the time. How long is it going to take me to be successful? Months passed. In December of 2020, I was at work sitting in my patrol vehicle and I called my wife. I told her that I was putting in my 2-week notice. She was so happy, and she assured me that our family would be alright. My last day of working for someone else was December 19, 2020 and I haven’t looked back since. I won’t look back. Since then, I’ve worked harder than I’ve ever worked, and I’ve enjoyed every moment. I’ve built my brand, RottenCorr Art, started a YouTube Channel, created art every day, and been present for every moment of my son’s life. I took a risk on myself. I am happy, successful, and proud of my decision.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve had creative talents since I was a kid. I never knew that I could really be an Artist as a career. I believed that I just needed to get a job. I want people to know that a job is not enough! You have to follow your dreams! It may seem scary to take risks, but your heart always knows what you should pursue and the direction you should take.
My brand, RottenCorr Art, is my reality of being a professional Artist. I love to paint on a canvas. My art is bold, bright, and it stands out from anything else. It is unique. In addition to canvas art, I create digital art, murals, etc. My goal is to provide homes, offices, businesses, etc. dope, eye catching art. My YouTube channel is a way for me to document each piece. Fans can follow my journey from the beginning since quitting my job as a Police Officer. I am living my dream.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Initially, I was intimidated by social media. But, as I started to get comfortable, I soon realized that social media was very important to building my brand and letting people know about RottenCorr Art.
Building a social media presence requires consistency. Posting your art or whatever you specialize in daily, and even several times a day is important. Show your work and your creative processes. Viewers want to see your craft. Make things interesting and show your personality to your viewers. That’s what sets you apart from others and makes people want to follow you. Interact with your followers. Always create and post. You are inspiring and helping others by doing what you love to do.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
A lot of people don’t understand why I quit a good paying job to be an artist. They don’t understand that my artwork will take me further in life than my 12 hour shift on a regular job. Non-creatives don’t realize that my art will be in museums one day, my art inspires people every day, and my art fully supports my family. When passion meets purpose, opportunities are limitless.
