We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Corinna Young a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Corinna, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Opportunity favors the bold, and that requires taking risk. The biggest risk I have taken is betting on myself and starting my own private therapy practice. As a black mental health advocate I felt the need to create a safe, non-judgemental space for my clients to begin the journey of healing. My practice “Hues of Healing Therapy” is not only a passion project, but also my life’s purpose. Taking such a risk required me to feel the fear of failing, but not allowing it to hold me hostage. By taking such a risk, I hope that I inspire others to believe in themselves and to walk in their purpose fearlessly.
Corinna, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Healing, like a hue, colors our lives in different and multifaceted ways. Healing is unique to each person’s life stories and experiences.
Hues of Healing Therapy provides a safe and non-judgemental space to unpack life challenges, difficulties, and hardships in order to evolve into your best self.
My personal philosophy of counseling begins and ends with compassion and empathy. In therapy I walk alongside clients on their journey to healing. As someone who has overcome various difficult circumstances I feel that I have a genuine heart and a listening ear to understand where clients are coming from.
I believe that the healing experience encompasses the whole person – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. I provide counseling that cultivates growth, healing, and restoration by helping clients feel seen, heard, and safe.
As a counselor, I support clients in the process of overcoming obstacles and helping them to unlock their limitless potential. Ultimately, I strive to encourage the client to work on being comfortable with choosing the paths and directions that are best and most effective for them. It is my desire to inspire, empower, and encourage my clients to find mental and emotional healing.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Prior to me becoming a Therapist, I was a School Counselor. While I enjoyed working with students and helping them to thrive socially and emotionally, I felt that something was missing. I did not feel fulfilled. For a few years I had been encouraged by colleagues to step into the world of mental health counseling. I refused at each turn, however what I learned is that sometimes we don’t chase our purpose, but our purpose chases us. In 2021, I decided to leave education and change careers by becoming a licensed therapist associate. I truly love what I do and am extremely grateful to walk alongside my clients as they navigate life’s challenges to become their best selves.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I had to unlearn is that you are allowed to live many dreams. Growing up I had a plan of what I wanted to do with my life. I knew what college I wanted to attend and the career that I wanted to pursue. Now that I look back I’ve realized that life has a way of guiding you exactly where you should be. I’ve learned along the way that I am allowed to live many dreams. I am allowed to pursue multiple passions. I am allowed to pivot as many times as I desire. Each of us are multidimensional and with that presents opportunities to live our lives in a way that honors the gifts, talents, and abilities that live within us. Unlearning that I only have to pursue one career, passion, and purpose has allowed me to cultivate a life of radical fulfillment.
