We recently connected with Corinna Bellizzi and have shared our conversation below.
Corinna, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I started my podcasting journey at the precise moment when I felt I lacked a meaningful project. At the time, I was nearing the end of my first year in pursuit of my MBA at Santa Clara University, when George Floyd was brutally murdered. I instantly felt that everything I was doing to support myself, my family, and my future (even in the midst of the COVID pandemic), was not enough.
From this ennui, my podcast was born roughly 6 months later. Care More Be Better is an invitation to care more so we can create a better world together. I cover topics related to social impact and sustainability as I interview thought leaders, celebrities, and bestselling authors across multiple disciplines. I even cover uncomfortable and unpopular topics that deserve more airtime,.
By leaning into this meaningful project I not only keep myself inspired, but I also inspire a community of fellow do-gooders who also want to make the world a better place. I get to interface with folks that are at the top of their industries about their passionate pursuits, and activists who are chomping at the bit and pushing for meaningful change. This is the most inspiring work I’ve ever consistently undertaken, and the value it brings is so much more than the paycheck I bring home from my work life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m an omega-3 expert and climate activist who pioneers brands and pushes them to lean into circular business practices. I led the growth of Nordic Naturals from its early existence as a fledgling fish oil company, to reach over $100 million in annual sales. After that success, and given my ongoing concern for the health of people and planet, I shifted my focus away from fish-sourced omegas to algae in 2016. Today I lead Örlö Nutrition, an algae-based nutrition leader that features the world’s first carbon-negative omega-3s and spirulina products.
At Örlö Nutrition we grow our algae using only green energy and the nutrients and light algae need to thrive. Our future-forward facility in Iceland leverages the power of technology, pristine Icelandic water, and Iceland’s geothermal energy to yield omega-3s that are 3x more bioavailable than fish oil, and other nutrients that are optimized for absorption – like the methylated form of B12 and Heme-2 Iron found in our Spirulina products.
I host 2 podcasts. Care More Be Better, invites you to care more about social impact and sustainability issues so we can create a better future together. My second show, Nutrition Without Compromise, features world-class doctors and researchers who share their expertise as it relates to health and nutrition, without compromising your ethics or the environment for your health. My most recent undertaking is that I’m authoring a new book about omega-3s, health, and sustainability.
I live, work, write, and podcast from my home on the central coast of California with my husband, 2 young boys, and a cadre of rescued animals. My mantra is simply this: You just go and you make it!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My forever goal is to help people understand they are capable of more than they thought possible. So many people suffer from stage fright, or from feelings of inadequacy. The thing I want each person to understand is that no one person is any better than them. All of us face the same fears. Some people are more outgoing and perhaps more naturally able to speak without stumbling, but each of us can learn to be more articulate, and we can gain confidence through practice, even if we’re shy.
I was not an outgoing kid. I was quite shy actually, and I hated being on stage, on camera, or to have the eyes of people on me. I would feel uncomfortable, and almost try to twist away from them. You can see this in photos of me as a child, and while I’ve grown through most of that now, I still feel that uncomfortable queasy inner feeling from time to time.
My first time on a stage, I felt crippled by fear. I forgot what I meant to say. I stumbled. Today, I’m not afraid. I’ve learned that as long as I prepare my mind, and know what the task ahead is, I’ll be just fine. I understand that people are actually rooting for me, and that they don’t want to see me fail. My perspective has changed, but even so, I’m still not a fan of being on camera. It’s still a little tough for me, but I continue to get more and more comfortable as time goes on.
When I first started podcasting, I felt warm flushes rush through me any time an unexpected technical difficulty arose, or when a guest became somehow combative (it happens, even when you least expect it). Now, over 3 years into that journey, it rolls off my back like water off a duck. I still don’t love being on camera, but I’m less self-conscious about it now.
For all of these reasons, I thoroughly enjoy interviewing people who aren’t super comfortable in an interview format. I see it as my job to make them comfortable, and to make them look their best. I swell with pride when I see an introvert speak with confidence, even when it doesn’t come until the last half of an interview. Then, in editing, I work to make them shine even more. My feeling is that they will be even better next time, and the next, and the next. They will learn and grow, and I will have been a positive part of that journey.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
While for my business life, I use my creative skills in marketing messaging, copywriting, and art direction, in my podcasting life, I seek to bring the best out of the people I interview. This is its own kind of direction really. I find it immensely rewarding to find myself the architect of a story well told.
As I commence my journey as a solo author for the first time, I find myself leaning into that cheerleading spot for myself. I talk myself through moments of doubt much as I would a shy guest, coming onto camera for an interview for the first time. I give myself grace. I ask myself to remember I know more than I think I do when I’m full of doubt. “Yes, Corinna – you really are qualified to write a book about omega-3s and sustainable nutrition. This is the industry, after all that you’ve worked within and even led for the last quarter century!”
I find it rewarding to know that I’m inspiring people, from my guests to my fans, to create the world they want to live within, and to truly believe that they can be the change they want to see in the world.
