We were lucky to catch up with Corie Walker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Corie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Before the Pandemic, I created something called The Rainbow Baby Initiative. This was my way of giving back to some local families who were dealing with the past loss of a baby and are now expecting another little one. I was able to gift newborn sessions to these chosen families so they could celebrate their new arrival while honoring their angel.
In simple terms, a ‘Rainbow Baby’ is a baby who is welcomed into a family after the loss of a previous baby, due to miscarriage, stillbirth or premature birth. A rainbow baby represents that the beauty of a rainbow does not negate the ravage of the storm of losing a child. When a rainbow appears, it provides a family with joy, while honoring the past storm, and acknowledging that the family is still dealing with its aftermath. A rainbow shows us beauty and light that has appeared in the midst of the darkness.
In those few years, I met some wonderful families who shared their stories with me. I feel so honored that they chose me to document such a meaningful time in their lives. I hope to start up my Initiative, or something similar, again soon.

Corie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi! I’m Corie, owner of Corie Walker Photography based near Cleveland, Ohio. I specialize in maternity, newborn and baby milestone photography. My love of photography started in high school, but it wasn’t until after the birth of my second child in 2012 that I discovered my passion could be an actual job. More than a decade later, I have a thriving photography studio and am well-known for my awesome customer service, endless patience, and beautiful newborn fairy tale portraits. I am also thrilled to offer a variety of gorgeous prints and art products to my clients.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I am very particular when it comes to posing newborns, so I get a lot of joy in shooting that perfect image. Where every detail is exactly how I envisioned it. However, I also love surprising and pleasing my clients. Not much compares to hearing how thrilled they are with their portraits.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
When I first started out, I took many online courses (10+ years ago, there weren’t near as many as there are today). I really enjoyed learning as much as I could about photography, studio lighting and posing babies. However, it took quite a few years for me to scrape the money together to do an in-person workshop. There’s something to be said for hands-on experience. I feel like my skills would have grown much faster if I would have invested that money earlier in my journey.
