We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Corey Vandergrift a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Corey , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
I hope my legacy I leave will encourage, young men across the World not just the United States, to always go after their dreams. People will tell you, you aren’t good enough or smart enough. What you are aiming for isn’t possible and already has been done. Never let what you are aiming for be compromised by someone else that doesn’t know your story. Keep pushing by the Grace of God.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Our Mission is to help young high school football athletes have a chance to play college football. We focus on reaching out to College Football Programs, High School Football Programs, and individual athletes. We do this to create opportunities for all of our High school athletes in our database to help them play at the collegiate level. Our company’s foundation stands on 4 pillars that we wholeheartedly believe and the pillars are: INTEGRITY, EXCELLENCE, PASSIONATE, and DEDICATED. Our team is comprised of 7 Individuals that brings decades of experience to the team and demonstrates our pillars each and everyday. We are PURE PASSION RECRUITING.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Before I ever became an owner of a company, I was just a young man from Alabama. I would eventually move far North and attend Bethany College in West Virginia. I played college football at Bethany College and would eventually meet my wife here and decide to settle down here. I struggled as a provider and man throughout our years of dating and early years of marriage. I lacked work ethic and the ability to sustain a job. It was issue after issue, job after job. We never gave up and one day my father in law introduced me to a good friend of his and also a church member that was in the oil and gas industry. He took a chance on me and through those grueling days and my first years I struggled to want to work 80+ hours a week and traveling for 14+ days straight away from home in the draining weather of hot summers and freezing winters always outdoors. I also during this time was up too 395 pounds due to my lack of motivation. I was depressed and wanting to just give up especially after my Uncle Mike passed away (he was a father figure to me). Through all the pain, all the job issues, and all the times I just wanted to give up I built a true resilience and I proved to myself I can do great things and create my legacy no matter the pain, or depression I had experienced. I ended up losing 100+ pounds of weight, I ended up getting promoted within the oil and gas industry, and I started Pure Passion Recruiting and Vanderfit. LLC. If I can come back from the deep depths of failure I experienced anyone can truly be what they desire to be. It took a lot of sweat, blood and hurt, but anything is possible through God.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Best advice I can give for managing a team and maintaining high morale would be First setting expectations early in your company and making sure everyone is on the same page. As someone still growing in my endeavors and learning everyday, I have discovered when your team is on different pages you lose the focus of the company and it can be hard to get it back on track if expectations and standards are not set right away. Secondly, give positive feedback often, and communicate. This is very important to be successful. Communication keeps everyone along with yourself on track and it eliminates any misunderstandings. Thirdly celebrate the highs with your team and identify the lows when necessary, having this healthy balance will help you in identifying areas of improvement. Lastly having core “pillars” or values that you along with your team stands on and implements is very important. My team for example we have four pillars that we abide by always : integrity, excellence,,passionate, and dedicated.
