We were lucky to catch up with Corey Mekell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Corey, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you have an agent or someone (or a team) that helps you secure opportunities and compensation for your creative work? How did you meet you, why did you decide to work with them, why do you think they decided to work with you?
Represented by Kia Todd Talent Agency & Sheila Legette Ent. I met Kia at an industry birthday party prior to her starting her agency. She was blown away by how I was moving on the dance floor and said she saw a star in me immediately. She kept me in mind when she started her agency and we’ve been locked in ever since.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a singer, songwriter, actor, host and all around entertainer. I’m currently on a Broadway National Tour, “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life & Times of The Temptations”, it’s been an amazing experience. I’ve learned so much about myself as a performer, having my talents stretched in ways I would have never before attempted on my own, the growth has been quite the gift. I’ve written for a lot of artist in the music industry, co-starred in a couple movies, with a lot of great projects on the horizon as well.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The hardest lesson I’ve had to unlearn is “people pleasing”. I automatically feel the need to be of service to anyone I cross paths with and go above and beyond for others even when it’s to my detriment at times. When I finally made the decision to set boundaries and become less accessible, it was my opportunity to see who would really show up for me, major eye opener and tough pill to swallow, but I’m honestly grateful I did it. I didn’t realize how much of a relief, but more importantly, how necessary it was eliminating what wasn’t for me.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The mission/goal is to always do enough in my career to take care of my family. Introduced them to wonders of the world they’ve never had the opportunity to explore. Even though I haven’t reached all the pinnacles in life I’ve set for myself, I’ve already experienced a lot of miraculous things that life has had to offer. So I want to make sure that my family can have that same opportunity if not more.
