We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Corey Gossett. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Corey below.
Corey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
When I was growing up south of Indianapolis I would write all of my finished work in a composition notebook that I started my freshman year of high school. I wrote mostly acoustic pop music, your typical singer/songwriter stuff. When I was a senior I put the last page in that book. On the last day of school my notebook got thrown away and I wasn’t ever able to find it and that caused me to lose my passion for music and writing for a long time. Eventually I had a friend that ended up getting into music and his hard work came around to eventually reinspire me. We made a song together in an entirely different genre than I was used to. It was something more Hip-Hop influenced. Just for fun. It was a way for me to push my creative boundaries and try something new that I hadn’t tried before. I ended up really feeling excited for the song and was wanting to look for someone to record with, After asking around on Twitter I had multiple people I went to high school with recommend someone they went to college with, Jordan Murphy aka Ash Matthews. He was and still is a sound engineer out of Dayton. Now, I have always been the type of person to get anxious and back out of stuff but something was telling me that no matter what I had to go to this session and just see what happens. It was this inner knowing that it was important for me to do. Its unexplainable but its just how I felt. So I went and we absolutely hit it off. To make a long story short.. we’ve made multiple albums and countless songs together, traveled to Hawaii and worked with artists and producers there, I lived with him for about 2 years, we released a song every single week in 2021, peaked at 10,000 monthly listeners on Spotify when I started at 150, AND I met my amazing girlfriend through our work and we now have my first child on the way. I say all of that to say that if I let my losses and my anxiety and fear of failure or not being “good enough” in a genre that I had no idea how to navigate… I wouldn’t have any of these amazing experiences I listed above. All of it stemmed from having the courage to step out of my comfort zone and do something new out of honesty, respect, curiosity, and love for a craft that I had been practicing my whole life. I am forever thankful for taking that risk and it reminds me that if it feels right in your chest, you should ALWAYS go for it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Corey Gossett. I’m originally from Indianapolis, IN. I’ve been a songwriter for as long as I can remember. I believe I wrote my first song in the 6th or 7th grade. Ever since then its always been something I’ve had a love and passion for. I had some friends that were generous enough to spend their time to teach me the basics of playing guitar and I really just took of with it from there. I would learn all my favorite songs and compounded knowledge over time from playing and consuming music to begin writing my own songs. Over the years of my own studies and spending time with some absolutely incredible musicians, writers, and engineers I have definitely picked up a lot of skills on the way. I would say that currently my main area of expertise is songwriting but I can also do production for anyone who may need it. I love to just sit down with people and create. That being said, my new album “Reciprocity” will be available everywhere on November 17th and my latest single “Grow” is out now if you want to check out some of my work and figure out if I could be of service to you in any way. Like I said, I just love to create and I have a good amount of experience in all areas music and adjacent.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I would say my main goal is to let people know they aren’t alone. A lot of my music is about hard times. I’ve had a couple people say that my music has saved their life and I’ve had a couple where it wasn’t enough to. Things like that can really shake up a persons view on what they are doing and why they are doing it for. I want the whole world to know they aren’t alone.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I don’t have the biggest social media audience (about 3000 followers combined on all my social) and to be blunt and honest. In my honest opinion, I don’t think it’s something people should really worry about. I think if you want to share something, you should. I think if you have a message you want to share then you should share it. But I think this is a big area where people get it wrong. I’m not saying it can’t be beneficial because clearly it can have a huge impact but if you really want to get moving forward then you should take care of the people around you. Go out and make real connections with people. Go to shows/networking events. Show REAL love. Give people something palpable and genuine and it’ll get you way farther than any singular post on Tik tok will. That being said, social media is a powerful tool but it is certainly not the end all be all of “making it” and it also depends on what your definition of “making it” is. But for me, I prefer real life.
