We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Corey Dyson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Corey below.
Corey, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I have always heard people say that consistency is the key to success. Though I agree that is apart of success I would say that being impactful is what it takes. You can be consistent at a craft and it could not be good. When you are impactful it means you are having a major effect on something. I do not rush when it comes to the next steps with SkyBox Productions. I take time and sit with my team to discuss what is next. If the next move is not impactful then we will not take it. That is how I have always operated. Even little steps can still be impactful. Also to be successful its about networking. You may have the talent to get you to the door but there may be someone who can open different doors to take your talents or ideas to the next level. Those are just a couple to name. There are many factors to being successful but always stay true to who you are a remember why you starting doing what you love in the first place.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As you may know already my name is Corey Dyson Jr and I am the CEO, Host, Artist & Podcaster for SkyBox Productions. Under this umbrella I have received a letter from the Office of the Sheriff in Charles County, MD. I have received a Sheriff’s Salute from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and have received A Senatorial Citation from the Senate of Maryland. In addition to being the CEO of SkyBox Productions, I am a full-time Senior Consultant Financial Analyst II for Booz Allen Hamilton going on 4 years May 2023. I am also a security officer for Blackout Security & Investigations. I am a proud father to my 2 year old son Corey Dyson III he is my priority and he is my world. I am a graduate from the National Treasure, The Illustrious Morgan State University earning my Bachelors degree in Business management with a focus in human resource management. I am the recipient of the Presidents Second Mile Award & Business Management award. I am a dean’s list scholar apart of the Clara I. Adams honors college. I am also a proud member of Alpha Nu Omega Fraternity, Inc. These are just a few of the things about myself I wanted to touch on.
When it pertains to SkyBox Productions we are a company that puts on live concerts for up & coming talents. We give them a platform where they are able to showcase their talent. The production was started in the summer of 2020. I was presented an opportunity to perform on a corporate level. Instead of taking that opportunity for myself I turned it into a business and opened this up for other artist to get this exposure as well. My family & I sat down to brainstorm some ideas and turned this opportunity & those ideas into SkyBox Productions and created a team. Since then we have put on 5 corporate level shows. three were at St. Charles Town Center in St. Charles, MD & two have been at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City located in Arlington, VA. We have also put on a “Queens Bootcamp” event hosted by Zenobia Dyson who is an artist under SkyBox Productions. This was a women’s empowerment event to help women raise their vibration. Under the SkyBox Productions banner we have an interview podcast called “Enter The SkyBox” where I conduct an interview every tuesday bringing a music artist, Entrepreneur, Business Owners and more and give them a platform to showcase what it is that they do. This has been an huge success as well. That was started simply as an idea I presented to my audience on Facebook. I received a lot of great feedback and people started to ask my available dates to get an interview. Now I am almost at 80 interviews conducted.
I am proud of the progress we have all made and I am proud of my team. Thank you to Corey Dyson Sr, Zenobia Dyson, Qur-an Dyson, Najee Dyson, Chrishae Whalen, Robert Holloway, & David Spence Jr for supporting the vision and helping bring a dream to reality. Also to Darius Barnhill, Pierre Harris, Joshua Herbert, and Corey Smith who have also dedicated time to these events. I am truly grateful for them.
What sets me apart from others is my genuine love for the people and recognizing the need. I have never been selfish. I know there are people who take music more serious than I so why not use my business to help elevate them and we all win together. If I am great at conducting interviews and speaking to people then why not use my platform to showcase the many talents in my local area and all over. Me being a music artist fueled all this and I know my role now. I want the people to know that SkyBox Productions does legit business and we want to see everyone succeed. Thank you to the many artist, businesses and more who have used this platform.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social Media has been an outlet for me since I was in High School. My brother Qur-an & I use to do skits on vine and transitioned the videos to Facebook once vine was gone. We started off with small views but people thought we were funny. The more content we put out the more views we received. Our skits are influenced by the things we see or what we are going through personally. When we took time to think of a skit were received better views which is why I say be more impactful than consistent. From that point especially being the only ones really doing skits locally we were known for creating content. We just kept expanding from that point.Once our family saw what was going on we added more people into our skits. Now when we are in public people will quote what we have said. When we started SkyBox Productions it was not hard to grab artist, interviewees, or an audience because we have already established that relationship with the public for a while. Social Media is a great tool for networking and meeting people. The only advice I have for anyone trying to build a presence is to be impactful with your presence. Do not try to be someone else just be yourself and find a unique way to grab the audience attention. Also to network. If you see someone doing the same thing you are doing it is okay to reach out and collab. Imagine grabbing your audience and their audience. Also do it for fun but get to the point where your hoby gets you paid. Find people who know the in’s and out of the business of social media so you can monetize your content.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Being active, approachable and available has been some key factors in gaining new artist, interviewees, and audience. When you are promoting yourself and being impactful with your steps the people will come. Stay active! After one of our events is finished believe that we are already planning the next one. We have team meetings before & after events to prep and also to go over the pros and cons of the previous event so we will know how to move better going forward. Making sure everyone is approachable is key. When people see the work you are doing they may have questions about how to get on the next you want to make sure that you have good character and a smile on your face. Your attitude if negative can turn them away fast. My team & I hold each other accountable so if you are not being approachable then we have to talk about it. Also there may be times that people have questions early in the mornings or late at night. Establish a common ground with them so they can respect your time but make yourself available because you never know what that person may bring. Some of those late calls have gave me some great artist who have performed and some great people who have been interviewed.
