Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cord Jones. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Cord thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
It was all a dream… Well, not really. You see, my mom and I started making cookies together as a way to spend more time together. Neither one of us had any desire, let alone a dream to start a cookie business. We found our time together in the kitchen to be valuable, and we fell in love with the joy that our cookies brought to people’s taste buds. Our cookies are made with love to spread love. We knew that this would be a worthwhile endeavor after our first pop up. We sold out within a couple of hours. We popped up again, and we sold out again. The support that our local community gave us showed that people had a desire for homemade cookies. Something that reminded them of their childhood or any other great memory. When we began this business, we wanted to be disruptors. We wanted to disrupt the way people currently purchased their cookies, for example, we offer cookie delivery, cookie bars, nationwide shipping, and pop ups, and we wanted to show people that you can run a business based off of humanity. It is not always about the numbers. It is about the people.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The baking world can be full of surprises and happy little accidents. There are many times in this new business venture where resilience had to be shown, but one moment that sticks out most was the day before preparing for our first Farmer’s market pop up. We had done some soft pop ups up to that point and our cookies were well received. We had no idea how many cookies we needed to make for this popular farmer’s market, so we shot for the moon. That meant us pulling an all nighter until the sun came up on market day in order to get all of the cookies baked, packaged, and market items prepared. I believe my mom and I got about 45 minutes of sleep prior to that first market. We sold out that afternoon, which was not only worth it, but solidified our decision to start this business.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of our first pivots was a happy little accident that I mentioned above. We were making a batch of Peanut Butter Cookies, and had accidentally mixed the dry ingredients from the Snickerdoodle in with the Peanut Butter batch, which means cinnamon was added to the Peanut Butter Cookies. Instead of throwing them away we did a taste test and decided to take them to market. Our version of this Peanut Butter cookie has become one of our best sellers.
