We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Coranisha Warren . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Coranisha below.
Alright, Coranisha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I have always had a passion for hair. As a little girl, I grew up wanting to pursue a career as a cosmetologist. However, my career choice was not thoroughly praised. My family wanted me to use my intelligence and choose a different career path. I mentally started my business in 2019, but I did not pursue my LLC until 2022. I put my hair desires on hold and attended school to become a physical therapist. After I graduated from physical therapy school and started my new job, it was time to execute my hair business. The same question occasionally comes to mind “If I could go back, would I start my business sooner?” Honestly, I do not know. If I started it sooner, maybe I would not have had the successful career I have today. Or maybe I would have a nationwide clientele. But if I had to choose, I would have started my business in 2019, immediately after graduating undergraduate, 3 months before starting physical therapy school. I think I was afraid of my business becoming successful and not being able to maintain my business and physical therapy school. I did not want to choose between my true passion and my upcoming career choice. Why could not I do both? That’s when I decided to wait until after I graduated.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Coranisha Warren, and I am the CEO of BGM Extensions (Black Girl Magic Extensions, LLC). As a young girl, I started combing my hair to be different from others. I tried numerous styles and styled my mom, sister, and friends’ hair. Then I started making wigs by hand and people wanted to purchase them. It was my “side hustle”. After watching countless of videos and practicing making wigs on a sewing machine, I finally perfected my craft. Since I could make a wig in under 1 hour with a sewing machine, I decided to create my own business. BGM Extensions has glueless wigs, custom wigs, clip-in hair extensions, eyelashes, and eyelash accessories. Each of my wig units is carefully made with love. If I won’t wear it, I won’t sell it. I think that’s what sets me apart from others. I am proud to have my own business/website and a different career path. Most individuals who make/sell wigs do not have a different career. I want all of my customers and potential clients to know about that all of their needs and desires will be fulfilled with BGM Extensions.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I have always been great at saving money. However, I needed more money to fund my business as well as continue to pay my bills while I was in school. I applied and started working at Walmart. I only spend money on bills, gas, and groceries. I cut out all shopping, hanging out, and getting my nails/toes done. The remainder of the money went to my business. If I did not have a wig to make the upcoming weekend and I was not scheduled at work, I would ask if I could work a full shift. My managers always allowed it. Because of Walmart and my buying customers, I was able to fund my business without any assistance.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I keep in touch with my clients through social media or directly through the telephone. I will provide my cellphone number to clients to discuss any questions regarding their wigs or products. A quick FaceTime call to demonstrate a wig install is very helpful to most of my clients, especially if it is their first wig. They will tag me/my business in their photos and I will repost them to my business page.
