Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Constanza Aravena. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Constanza, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve had the privilege to work on was the creation of a collage-based Tarot deck called ‘Corazon Collage.’ This project held special significance for me due to the profound personal and creative journey it took me on.
I initiated this project in 2020, a year when, like the rest of the world, I found myself in a period of deep self-reflection. Tarot cards had always held a fascination for me due to their capacity to provide insights into the human psyche. Consequently, I decided to embark on a project that would merge my artistic inclinations with my desire for self-discovery.
The project commenced with extensive research into Tarot, its historical roots, and the symbolism underpinning each card. I delved into various Tarot decks and interpretations, seeking a comprehensive understanding of the archetypes and meanings associated with them. This research phase was enlightening, deepening my appreciation for the complexity of Tarot and its potential for personal growth. During this phase, I enrolled in a Tarot course, connecting with fellow women on a similar journey.
Subsequently, the artistic dimension of the project came to the forefront. I pushed my artistic boundaries, investing time and effort to achieve exceptional results with each card. Every card became a unique work of art, blending elements from sources I had never explored before. As I immersed myself in the creation of each card, I found myself delving into my own subconscious mind. The process of selecting and arranging images compelled me to confront my own beliefs, turning it into a therapeutic exercise.
The completion of each card felt like a personal triumph. I infused each one with my own experiences and emotions, pushing the boundaries of my creativity.
Ultimately, the collage-based Tarot deck project became a tangible representation of my spiritual and artistic journey. It stood as a labor of love, a fusion of art and self-discovery that enabled me to connect profoundly with my innermost thoughts and emotions. This project remains one of the most meaningful and rewarding experiences of my life. I continue to use the deck for introspection and guidance to this day, with the hope that it can also assist others on their journeys.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a Collage Artist originally from Santiago, Chile, now residing in the vibrant city of Los Angeles, California. My creative journey began after a decade-long career in Fashion Advertising, during which I honed my skills in visual storytelling. In 2016, I decided to pivot my artistic focus towards the world of Analog and Digital Collage, embarking on a transformative path that has fueled my passion ever since.
My work delves into the intricate tapestry of beauty, femininity, and identity within the context of a visually-driven society. Living in a new country, I have found inspiration in the dynamic fusion of cultures and the ever-evolving landscapes of nature, architecture, and fashion. Through my collage artworks, I seek to unravel the layers of meaning embedded in these visual elements, inviting viewers to contemplate the profound connections between aesthetics and personal identity.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
In the course of my creative journey, I’ve uncovered several invaluable resources that I fervently wish I had stumbled upon earlier. These resources have significantly enriched my creative process, making it a more enjoyable and fulfilling experience.
Engagement with Creative Communities: Immersing myself in online platforms and communities dedicated to art and creativity has proven to be super rewarding. I regret not discovering these communities sooner, as they would have exposed me to a broader spectrum of perspectives and diverse forms of inspiration. They’ve also reshaped my rigid perception of what it means to ‘be an artist.’
The Transformative Power of Art Workshops and Classes: After college, sometimes we forget about workshops and classes, especially when it comes to things outside the academic setting. The guidance and insights offered by experienced instructors have been a true game-changer, especially when it comes to interests that are outside my career, like poetry, literature, magic, etc.
Art Books and Literature: Despite my enduring love for reading, I now recognize the missed opportunity of delving into art and creative literature sooner. Exploring this realm would have undoubtedly deepened my understanding of the field and broadened my artistic horizons.
Unlocking Creativity with Challenges: These exercises have consistently led me to unexpected breakthroughs.
The Necessity of Taking Breaks: It has taken me a while to appreciate the importance of taking a step back and allowing myself some downtime. This vital practice has proven to be a much-needed respite for my mind, allowing it to recharge and return to the creative process with renewed vigor.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding thing about being an artist is knowing that I can go to a place within myself where I can try something, change reality for a bit, learn something, and then move on. The thing is, whether what I’ve created is shown to others or not, whether it makes money or not, the fact that there is something that can only be done by me in this exact moment is priceless and powerful. And most of the time, but not always, it’s fun.
