We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Constance Fields a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Constance, thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
There are many moments that I have experienced that I would consider “defining”. However, one stands out as the catalyst for how I began the journey towards my authentic self. That was finding out at 33 that I had colon cancer. After having surgery to remove the stage 1 tumor, I realized that I am here for a greater purpose. I had been given an opportunity that so many others had not received. I wasn’t about to waste it… and I haven’t! Since then, I have acted on tv and on stage, started (and paused for now) a podcast, conquered imposter syndrome, and shown up for my therapy clients in a way that positions me as a guide alongside helping them find their voices. I love it here!

Constance, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Georgia in private practice. I use my empath abilities, knowledge, and creative background to guide others through their journey of healing. Because my background involves the performing arts, I often will incorporate expressive arts techniques into session with my clients. I also believe in helping my clients begin to heal their inner child wounds and begin to nurture themselves again. I am a big proponent of people living their lives authentically, finding their voices, and aligning with their purpose.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I was diagnosed with cancer, I was pretty quickly scheduled for surgery, because I worked for a colon and rectal surgeon at the time. During the time that I was waiting for surgery day, I remember being outside at night, crying on my knees with my hands gripping the dirt. I spoke out loud, “why is this happening to me? I don’t understand!“ Just then, I audibly heard a deep voice say, “It is not for you to understand, it is for you to believe.” After that, a feeling of peace washed over me and I knew that everything would be OK. There is a greater purpose for me, and everything that I have experienced since that moment continues to prove it. Not for me, but for others.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I struggled, for a little while, with trying to balance acting and pursing the hours needed for my license as a mental health therapist. I had to unlearn this idea that I could balance everything. I wanted to do it all, and honestly, it was tearing me apart. As an artist, I had to learn that everything has its timing and season. That I am always an artist and creative, even when I’m not playing a character, and that there is a such thing as expressive arts therapy. I was able to participate in a 9 month program with the North West Creative & Expressive Arts Institute, and now bring creativity into therapeutic practice.
