We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Connor Daniel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Connor thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew I wanted a career in music when I was about 11 years old. My friends were getting really into Green Day’s American Idiot album, and when they showed me, I was blown away. My family surprised me with Green Day tickets during that tour, and seeing Billie Joe do his thing on stage made me want to pursue music as my career.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As an artist, I’ve been playing in bands since I was 11 years old; having that creative outlet has always been something I can’t live without. I love being on stage and I love writing songs. I am in a band called socialghosts with 2 of my best friends and we have the best time making and playing music together.
As for music production, I sort of stumbled into that career by accident. I was playing in a band called Next Door to the Moon at the time, and my drummer’s sister was also in a band called Alone Together; I was asked to produce a few songs by them and had a blast doing that. I slowly started taking on more production clients at home until things just took off and I began being able to support myself full time doing that. After several years of grinding it out working with a ton of unsigned artists at my home studio, I was offered a position to work with John Feldmann as assistant engineer and that has allowed me to opportunity to grow my career in many ways; I am very thankful for the opportunity.
As a music producer, I am able to offer a range of services: editing of all kinds, recording/tracking instruments/vocals, full scale production where I see the song through from start to finish, mixing, mastering and additional production for bands that have the song pretty much done but just want some extra stuff layered on top. My main goal is to just help facilitate getting the artist’s song to the finish line. As a producer, I am able to help steer the ship in a direction I feel is most suitable for the band/artist. I never push or force my opinions onto them but I do make them available so they can be aware of all the different roads the song can take. I work really hard to make each song unique and the best possible representation of that artist.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think the most rewarding aspect in working in music is creating something from nothing; turning ideas or thoughts into full songs. I also think it’s really enjoyable watching artists I work with light up when I exceed their expectations in a production setting.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I have the very rare opportunity to make a living doing music which is something I definitely do not take for granted; I am going full force into music to give myself and my daughter a stable and secure life. I also want my daughter to see that no matter how ambitious someone’s dream is, it can be achieved with hard work and perseverance.
