We recently connected with Connie Kelly and have shared our conversation below.
Connie , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the most important things small businesses can do, in our view, is to serve underserved communities that are ignored by giant corporations who often are just creating mass-market, one-size-fits-all solutions. Talk to us about how you serve an underserved community.
Most people are not looking for fancy food. They are looking for delicious, relatable, every day cuisine.
Retirees looking for home cooking as an alternative to cooking for themselves at home or eating out.
Youth and young adults learning how to cook.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
It seems like I was born to cook!
As soon as I was old enough to push a chair over to the stove, you’d find me in the kitchen with my mom and her mom.
Mom and Grandma were both born in the Philippines, and mom joined the US Navy to see the world,
landing in America where she met my dad, a self-proclaimed Georgia “white boy.”
In their travels, Mom and Dad met people from all over the world and literally made friends over food,
sharing recipes and laughs over a delicious dinner, so naturally I’m inspired by cuisines all around the world.
After decades of self-catering my own private parties and volunteering to cater for friends, churches, and community activities, I left the corporate world and started Connie’s Home Cooking to share my love and joy of food with a wider circle of friends.
My customers get to experience the home style cooking they would receive as a guest to my home, all made with love and care, a welcome departure from fast food or takeout.
Have you ever had to pivot?
After 20 years in the corporate world, I walked out the door from a meeting and started my business the next day. I’ve never looked back!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has literally been word of mouth.
