We recently connected with Connie Jo Sechrist and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Connie Jo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I feel like after being in this industry for decades, I’m finally working on the most meaningful project right now. It’s a short film that I wrote and will be directing. I’ve worn many different hats in the industry, but this is my first writing and directing experience. I’ve been fortunate to help countless writers and directors over the years bring their stories to life and I feel the time has come for me to finally create something meaningful of my own.
This project is deeply personal for me. It comes from a place and a desire to understand and heal from the emotions of depression. Growing up with a family history of depression, I’ve felt myself on the edge of that dark place sometimes and it truly does take a lot of mental strength to not fall in. As an advocate for mental health, I believe that by delving into the real psyche of depression and understanding it from a different perspective, we can better help those who suffer from it and those around them understand their pain.
I’m currently fundraising for it. So if anyone reading this is in a position to donate, your contribution will help in hiring crew, securing essential locations, renting equipment, covering food expenses, post-production services, and festival submissions.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m an Actress and Emmy® Nominated Producer from San Jose, CA. My films have been recognized at prestigious festivals such as SXSW, Tribeca, and other Academy Qualifying Festivals around the world. I’m well-known for my dynamic and complex roles in drama, action, and sci-fi genre films.
As a passionate advocate for mental health, I have produced and starred in over 20 films that explore mental health and personal stories, with the goal of de-stigmatizing mental health issues and breaking down barriers. I’m committed to raising awareness about the prevalence of mental health problems and encouraging greater understanding and acceptance is evident in the impactful nature of her work.
I’m also a respected leader and mentor in various independent film groups around the world, where I strive to inspire and support the growth of other aspiring filmmakers.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a filmmaker is the opportunity to create stories that make a real difference in the world. While I’m incredibly proud of the recognition my films have received, what truly drives me is the chance to address important social issues, particularly mental health through my work. Knowing that my art can impact people’s lives and contribute to important conversations about mental health is incredibly rewarding.
My role as a mentor in various independent film groups is another source of fulfillment. Being able to inspire and support aspiring filmmakers, helping them grow and pursue their dreams, is a gratifying part of my creative journey. It’s all about fostering a sense of community and collaboration within the industry.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
By recognizing and supporting creativity, providing financial aid to artists, and offering arts education at all levels, from schools to community workshops. We should also cherish and value the creative community, creating platforms for artists to showcase their work and connect with the public. By valuing and investing in the arts, we enrich our culture, promoting innovation and creativity for everyone’s benefit.
