We were lucky to catch up with Connie Ho Xiang Ning recently and have shared our conversation below.
Connie , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on up until now would be “A Man Called Otto.” It was also the most difficult task I have to accomplish in my 3th year as a CG Artist. For the project, the task was to have a full CG cat to replace the real life cat actor when it cant perform some of the required actions. Everybody adores cats and know so well on how cats look and moves so, creating a CG cat to match a real-life cat was difficult. On top of that, the animation for the cat seems almost impossible as it was hard to get references for the cat’s action. Lots of back and forth meetings, fiddling on the groom, the cat’s expressions, and the overall animation from the start of the project to the end! Even though it was a very difficult task at the time, but with the team effort and endless work hours the project was meaningful to me. It was my first film lead project as a CG artist and I’ve learned so so much in the course of just a few months. I’ve realized how important it was to have a great team, a supporting supervisor and an understanding client. After the project, everything else seems manageable, as I’ve learned what is important to focus on, or what a client would expect to see more, or how to communicate with my teammates better.
Connie , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi everyone! My name is Connie, I am a CG generalist, where I create 3d contents from making moving texts to the car commercials you see on your YouTube ads, or the flying spaceships you watch in the theater, or the city that Godzilla destroy, anything you can think of me as a CG artist will try to bring your ideas to life! I am from a small city from Malaysia, and growing up I wanted to be involved in the medical industry, but after my first year in pre-meds school I transferred to an art school. Watching my sister who is an animator, bringing characters to life stirred up a passion for art in me. Everything feels connected in the 3d world, I could be designing and make clothes in Marvelous Designer, creating creatures or unthinkable environments in Houdini, Maya, or Blender, or 3d print a model that was created in a software. Knowing myself who is interested in everything and so easily distracted with new ideas, from here, I could actually participate in some of the different industries there is. If someday I want to be designing clothes or if some fashion designer wants to create a virtual world fashion show I can help bring that idea to life! I’m always open to ideas, exploring different approaches and figure out solutions together to bring an idea to life.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part has been meeting new people and their ideas. Everyone has a different approach to doing things , and it is always fun to hear the thoughts and the solutions to figure out a problem together.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
To be honest, myself I have been still working on this. Working as a full-time employer at a studio, I don’t have much free time to create my own content for my social media. One thing I know for sure is that one has to constantly active on posting their work and connect to the online world. I did a challenge a while ago by creating a content/posting everyday for a month, the audience I have within that month grew constantly.
