We recently connected with Confucius Jones and have shared our conversation below.
Confucius , appreciate you joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I make a full time living from creative work after many many years of not being able to do so. What got me to this point is, of course, trial and error, and also just being consistent and smart. The biggest step in making that happen was radio which provided me a platform to expand my brand and creative ideas to a bigger audience. I honestly don’t believe there was much I could’ve done different besides maybe taken school more seriously.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Confucius Jones and am I a comedian, radio host and producer, and also DJ. I originally got into the industry through DJing around Austin and eventually meeting the right people which led to radio. On air I don’t DJ but am strictly a personality. What sets me apart from so many who try to pursue their dreams and goals is that I am utterly fearless. I will stop at nothing to achieve my goals and find avenues to get there. For comedy I am trying to follow in the footsteps of giants and also help the Austin comedy scene gain national recognition. What I am most proud of is being able to show my kids that you can achieve anything if you really want it and are willing to put in the work.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is being able to make a living off of it. I worked 9 to 5s that I HATED to try and fund my dreams so to be able to work in those same dreams is amazing.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I had to walk away from a job I had that paid most of the bills because it was taking too much time away from what I really wanted and that was radio. I gambled on radio and it paid off with a full time position.
