Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Concept. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Concept, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
In life we are often presented with difficult choices. Many people want the results that come from the harder choice but end up making the easier choice. The same can be said about the rap game. The easy routes are paying your way to the top or trying to be apart of someone else’s movement. The harder routes include starting by yourself and creating your own sound and movement. I chose the latter. Having moved around a lot it, my sound and style have always been compromised of eclectic influences. I wanted to create a brand that represented that. That is how GOOD HERB RECORDS came to be. It would eventually turn into a home for people with their own way of doing things. After moving to San Antonio in 2019 right before the start of covid, I had to start all over. The subsequent lockdown allotted me to the perfect opportunity to begin building because nobody could do anything. I started with a house party in 2020 that featured some hot local artists. From there I was able to link up with Tiron Banks of Aerolife Shows and participate in larger shows around Texas, as well as outside of Texas. Following his format with my own company, I began investing in larger shows and opportunities for San Antonio. Since then we have not stopped providing spaces and events for artists all over the country.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
To be honest, my life and brand have always been centered around two things. Food and weed. Good herb being a double entendre for weed and actual herbs you’d use for cooking. I am a chef by profession. The association between the two is obvious, but it also much deeper for me. Food and weed are how I bond with family. Food and weed have helped me survive as Ive moved around the country absorbing different experiences and cultures. Being in the food industry has allowed me to meet so many successful artists and venue owners. Building your database of connections is essential to growing as a business. Having lived in multiple legal weed states before and after they achieved legalization, I have gotten to see how persistence in a positive purpose will eventually get you heard and you will see progress. I apply this to GOOD HERB RECORDS everyday. I am extremely proud of all of our artists who work hard everyday to be positive influences in the community. Between the artists on the label we provide a wide array of services. These include recording, engineering, mixing, mastering, show placements, tour management, venue acquisition, promotion, marketing, digital art, logos, flyers, photography, production, artist merch, and a lot more.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Perception is everything in todays social media driven society. You will be immediately judged by what you put into public view. If Good Herb is having issues the public will most likely never know because we appreciate solving problems peacefully internally. Professionalism is important. Companies, brands, fans, and potential investors have access to everything posted publicly. We have a good reputation of handling difficult situations professionally. From last minute cancelation, to people trying to instigate violence at events, we have experienced it all. How we handled those situations has helped build our reputation up tremendously.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Now that we are a bit removed from the pandemic, I have found that actually going to events in person and networking with people is the source of new clients, Typically if we are both at the event we already have something in common. The follow-up after meeting in person is also important. Offering the services you believe they might be interested in based on the conversation that was had in person.
