We were lucky to catch up with Comfort Beene recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Comfort thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Looking back on your career, have you ever worked with a great leader or boss? We’d love to hear about the experience and what you think made them such a great leader.
I just recently became the Athletic Director at North Canyon High School and alongside God’s plan and my degrees, I owe a lot of my confidence and preparedness in this position to my collegiate AD, Mr. Dick Christy. I attended The University of North Carolina at Pembroke for undergrad and to obtain my masters. Dick Christy became the University’s AD my junior year in undergrad and the way he carried himself and cared for our entire athletic program was beyond anything I’ve ever encountered. He was very humble, open, genuine and to say the word supportive is truly an understatement; He always went above and beyond what this “world” would expect. After my first year in my masters program I became the University’s Head Spirit Squad Coach, an opportunity he gave me and I will always be grateful for. I’m blessed to have been mentored by Mr. Christy as an athlete and Coach under his leadership. In all that he has allowed me to be apart of, taught me and so much more, the one thing that inspires me the most about Mr. Christy and his phenomenal wife Windy is that they are true ambassadors of God’s kingdom. Every place they step foot in, they truly leave it better than before. That is what I aspire to be like every day!
Comfort , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born in Ghana, but my family is from Liberia and we migrated to North Carolina in the early 90’s. I have the most incredible husband who I met in grad school at UNC-Pembroke and this is about to be our fourth year in Arizona. I was raised in the arts: singing, dancing and acting, while everyone else in my family dove head first in almost every sport possible. After being raised with a full house of athletes, competing in pageants, being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes through a virus and being highly involved in UNC-Pembroke’s athletic program, I wanted to learn more about the body, self image/self esteem and sports. That is what led me to want to pursue sports administration after obtaining my B.S in Mass Communications/Public Relations. My life has truly changed since the last article. I was a dance teacher and Head Cheer Coach at North Canyon High School and former Suns hip hop dancer in Phoenix AZ. Now I am the new Athletic Director at North Canyon high School, excited and ready to support all of our teams in every aspect! I am so proud of how the Lord has orchestrated every area of my life, what I am living right now is all my 8th grade self dreamed of and prayed for and God has truly been faithful.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My church family at Spirit of Faith taught me that everything that we will ever be in life, God has already put in us (along with so much more). My mission in life is to be and do all that God intended for me before I leave this Earth. I do not want to die full, I want to make sure I have poured all of myself out to every soul I encounter.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I’ve answered this question before, but It doesn’t hurt to remind myself! The Bible, it holds everything I’ll ever need in life.
