We recently connected with Colton Schlines and have shared our conversation below.
Colton, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
Dos Mundos started with lead singer Colton Schlines and guitarist Mahatma Largaespada performing at open mics. These open mics were unpaid but we would sometimes earn tips from patrons at the places we played at. Eventually Luis Morales joined the band and we got our first paid gig at a coffee shop in Omaha called Stories Coffee. It was strange as we were only used to playing a couple songs at open mics but this was our first long 2 hour set. Since then we had an addition to the band Sebastian Chacon on percussion and we have played at many different venues in Omaha including, secret park cocktail bar, Cattle Call restaurant and lounge, Voodoo taco, and were hired for cooperate events as well. In the future we are expecting to have gigs at Gene Leehy mall, Sonny’s outdoor venue in Aksarben and even expanding our zone of where we do venues and have a gig scheduled in Lincoln Nebraska.

Colton, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Dos Mundos as mentioned earlier originally formed with lead singer Colton Schlines and Guitarist/ current bassist Mahatma Largaespada. They started doing covers of songs and eventually Colton began writing his own songs so originals were added to the mix. Luis Morales was the third to join the group and took up rhythm guitar. Sebastian Chacon was the last to join our group and added the much needed missing piece of rhythm. An interesting fact about the band also is that all members are also coworkers at a non profit in a nonprofit in omaha called the Latino center of the Midlands.
The name Dos Mundos means “two worlds” in Spanish this name derived from the fact that we are a band that plays music from many different cultures. The majority of the band is Latino with Mahatma being from Nicaragua, Sebas from Colombia and Luis with Mexican heritage. While Colton is white American who learned Spanish from friends while growing up. We draw influences from Latin and American artists or in better words from “two worlds”. We seamlessly blend Latin genres with American pop songs and even include genres like Spanish Flamenco. All while respecting the origins and culture of the music and honoring those who created and trail blazed these genres. The original songs are written by lead singer Colton and adapted by the band for a live setting. We are very proud to have such variety in our repertoire as to hopefully have a little gem for every audience member that attends our shows.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal driving our creative journey is ultimately to have a successful career in music. everyone in the band has a passion for music and would love to be able to do it full time. touring different cities in the US and even go internationally.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that i as the lead singer had to unlearn is to curb perfectionism. While its good to be detailed oriented it is nearly impossible to be perfect. Struggling to make things perfect can be frustrating and ive come to learn that people fal in love with imperfections.
