We recently connected with Coloma Muro and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Coloma thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
At the age of 25, I was running the Spanish office of an international European company. I had 110 employees that I personally trained. Beyond my office manager duties, I dedicated my energy into developing skill-specific training programs to promote employee development, and into measuring and reporting on marketing campaign performance, among others.
I was recruited for this position through Linkedin, during the time I was working as a Conservationist at the Zoological Park of Barcelona. I was about to be sent out to Africa to lead a project there, but the offer to work in Corporate was something I hadn’t explored yet.
The company’s mission was in alignment with my values, as it worked with countries in need of resources, to prosper. I thought that by working there I would be contributing to my philanthropic vision at a broader scale.
Leaving behind my work as a researcher and stepping into the corporate world was a risk for me, as it meant to try something completely new. One of the greatest risks in my life though, came after a year of working in corporate.
I owned a beautiful apartment in the center of Barcelona, located 5 minutes from the beach. I had a wonderful life, the cutest dog, and an amazing partner. But something in me was off. I had learnt a lot by working with non-profits but I wanted to explore how and where else I could share my drive to helping the world heal. When I was offered to open more offices in other areas in Spain, I quit. I bought a one-way ticket to Bali with the intention of studying yoga there. I didn’t have anything other than my bag pack and a dream.
After some months in South East Asia, I had a motorbike accident in which I was told I would never be able to use my foot again, other than to walk “with difficulties”. The decision of leaving my career, family, and home behind turned into an unexpected shift in seconds. I spent months in a hospital in that foreign country until I decided to take another risk, which was flying to California.
6 years later I am living in LA, running my own business as a Coach, helping others let go of the stories that hold them back, and encouraging them to taking risks and transform their lives from the inside out.
The more I step into the unknown, the more I grow. The Universe never stops showing that the biggest risk would be no taking any risk.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an Empowerment Coach with a relentless commitment to guiding individuals towards living beyond self-imposed limitations and conditioning.
My career ranges from working as a Consultant for Non-Governmental
Organizations, being a Mindfulness Coach for companies, working as a
Conservationist (I hold a Primatology MSc), and as a Therapist and Researcher
in several Mental Health institutions.
With over 12 years of experience within the Neuroscience and Psychology
fields, I combine my background on research with a holistic integrated trauma-
informed approach. I draw from several healing modalities designed to access
personal freedom, build confidence, and create health, abundance and
transformation in all areas of life from the inside out.
The most valuable thing is my focus on mind, body, emotional, and contextual factors that influence wellbeing. My way of understanding and waving between Neuroscience and Spirituality, and connecting the two under a compassionate Coaching framework expands my clients’ ability to bring more depth and meaning to their lives, like no other.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
The ability to trust yourself is the core aspect I had to cultivate to position myself where I am. In order to do so, I had to lean into the unknown that is to work for the self. Trusting yourself is a skill that you develop the more you practice, like any other thing in life. And this means to choose what’s hard over what’s comfortable. For me, this is love. To show up for yourself – your purpose – regardless of how you feel about yourself or the fears you may have. It means to not let fear dictate your behaviors, and to do the things you don’t feel “ready for”.
When I was younger, fear prevented me from sharing my potential with the world, and as I matured, I realized I was not honoring who I was.
Starting with accepting everything that you are, and re-committing day after day to show up for the good of the world, is what has helped surrender and build trust within.
Discovering that my mission – to heal – is greater than myself, has pulled me through situations I never imagined I would be able to endure. And through the process of always choosing what’s uncomfortable, I have been able to cultivate resilience, self-confidence, and peace within.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to go through years of re-programming for me to get to the core of who I truly am, which is to be fully in integrity. From this space, I can wholeheartedly and genuinely be of service, without needing validation.
Before the phase in which I consider I stepped into my power, I thought “I needed this or that” to “be this or that”. I didn’t trust that what I already had/be was enough. Breaking through the conditioning and the blocks is a lifelong practice yet I believe that once you come in contact with your true essence you’re golden. Because then you yearn to be there, and you focus your energy in figuring out what’s in the way.
We are all here for a reason, peeling of the layers and tapping into your truth is the greatest gift that you can give to yourself and to the world. However, it is a very painful journey, as it entails constant grief. It is also a deeply fulfilling experience as you build freedom and safety the more you come home to yourself. There is nothing to control, there is nothing that you need to prove. There simply is, and you get to live it.
