We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Collings MacCrae. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Collings below.
Hi Collings , thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Collings MacCrae developed the idea for the Fox Argall Mysteries by combining her interest in neurodiversity (her family is highly impacted) with complex, character-driven storytelling. The series centers on Fox Argall, an autistic criminologist whose unique mind helps him solve intricate murder mysteries while exploring relationships and managing his personal flaws. MacCrae’s focus on relationships for autistic persons IRL involves weaving psychological depth, romance, and suspense into her narratives reflects her passion for creating unconventional protagonists and ensemble casts.
Collings , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m driven by a desire to create authentic, character-driven stories that explore neurodiversity and human complexity. My Fox Argall Mysteries reflects my passion for portraying neurodivergent characters IRL with honesty, sensitivity and depth, aiming to challenge stereotypes while highlighting their unique strengths and openly discussing vulnerabilities. I’m committed to crafting stories to resonate both emotionally and intellectually with readers.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I had a 40 year career as a health law consultant. I worked inside biopharm for 20 years then had my own consulting business for 23 years. When I retired, Vella started and I was invited to publish on the new platform. My grandson had been diagnosed with autism and was struggling. So! Fox Argall is my dreams for him in a main character. Since then, I’ve written 10 manuscripts, eight in the series and two middle grade fantasies. Two in the Fox series are published and I’m editing book three, The Reluctant Whistleblower, which spins off a major career event I experienced.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I can share most of the story for The Reluctant Whistleblower or the story of my own journey of autism. My sister is severely disabled with profound autism. I am her guardian.
