We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Collin Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Collin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a fun one – what’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?

Most bands today don’t realize that you don’t have to use every piece of industry standard equipment. When everyone uses the same tricks, software, tone, and equipment, you sound like everyone else. Use what you have and use it in your own way. Express yourself in your own words with your own style.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I got into music by just being around it. I’ve always loved it and so I decided to write it at a very young age. I figured that if I’m able to do it then I’m just gonna roll with it. I’m an independent artist from Ohio, and I play in the band Blip alongside my band mates, Clinton Smith and Jacob Watson. Art in general is essential for everybody, there’s something there for everyone, no matter what they’re into.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.

My brother Clinton and I saw Jacob on the bus huffing permanent markers, he was a weird kid. One day we started talking to him and I realized we had a lot in common. We started getting into writing music around the same time and we were working on trying to figure out how to record music. He’s a rapper and I was just starting Blip. Eventually we asked him to join since he had already featured on one of our songs.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?

The whole point of my art is to spend the least amount of money as possible. I find it to be more creative and genuine using what you have at your disposal. I’ve always liked the low-budget/no-budget approach to things, it’s just more unique that way. People can see that energy and respect the effort and uniqueness of it all. It’s a different experience to actually put in the work, rather than throw money at it.
