We were lucky to catch up with Collin Smith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Collin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
Over the last 13 years, The Cravory has been rooted here in San Diego and we have served our customers more than 5,000 different cookie flavors. The difference between a Cravory Cookie and any other is that we start with a unique dough, add in unique mix-ins and toppings, and then bake all our cookies at different temperatures. We find that starting a cookie from scratch (vs just adding in toppings like others do) creates the ideal texture and taste for the perfect cookie. Soft in the center, crispy on the edge. We don’t make large cookies that you can’t finish by yourself, but rather 2oz cookies so you can try multiple flavors and share with your family and friends. We will continue to serve San Diego as well as ship our cookies nationwide with passion for the process.
Collin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I began my career at Wells Fargo, taking on several leadership roles in several areas: banking, lending and home preservation. When my friend (and current business partner) opened the Point Loma location in 2014, I knew that I had to move to San Diego and join this amazing company.
The Cravory creates six new flavors each month and continue to excel with our Best sellers and Adventurous flavors. With the ability to individually wrap the cookies and brand with my customer’s logos, I was able to set myself apart and provide an outstanding product and service. Whether it’s for a convention to attract new customers or sending cookies as thank you gifts, The Cravory continues to strive for the perfect gift.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When Covid hit in March 2020, resilience was the foundation of our company. We had very few customers coming through our doors and even fewer wanting to spend money on a luxury such as a cookie.
But then we pivoted and focused the majority of our business on shipping cookies nationwide. This was the perfect way to send something to loved ones for holidays, birthdays or for any occasion. We were able to keep all our employees on staff and continued to hire. It was due to our resilience that we were able to face the fear of the pandemic and find a way to make it through.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth. Being local and having a delicious product helps, but it’s really that first bite you take into a Cravory Cookie that will be memorable and make you want to share with your family/friends.
