Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Collin Davis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Collin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Life is a gamble. Luck is an artform. Music is risky. Rock and roll is dangerous; at least it should be. We risk security and stability, but is there really any security these days? We can’t help ourselves, the songs are in us and have to come out. Seems like the rewards usually outweigh the risk when you obey your instinct.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Writing songs is a way of life for me and my three pals in Thread The Lariat: Dougie Bell (guitar & vocals), Aaron Torske (bass) and Oscar Quintero (Drums). We bend together some rock genres, fire off some guitar riffs, twist in some words and try to make something interesting. Then we go out and play it live for people. Rinse and repeat. If you’re into catchy melodies, diverse rock sounds and compelling lyrics, well….. so are we.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me personally, once we have the skeleton of a new song locked, I enjoy dialing down the last little details like harmonies, screaming vocals and keyboards. It really starts to take it’s shape at that point. Then once we get to hear it all mixed for the first time, that’s probably the most rewarding part of the process. Delivering a strong live show with an energetic crowd singing along is a close second. Learning to enjoy the mundane aspects along the way makes those rewarding moments much more fulfilling.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Like most bands, we thought it would be cool if our songs were on the radio. Not so easy to crack into as it turns out. We kept writing and recording what we thought was cool, and for a while it was just…. crickets. But then they gave us some spins, and some more, and we got all stoked.
