We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Colleen Lippert. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Colleen below.
Colleen, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
I actually named it in honor of my grandfather. I was very close to him and considered him my “anchor” in life. He was also in the Navy, so it’s fitting! He didn’t get the chance to see me start my company, but I feel like he is always with me. Tying him to my business brings me a lot of comfort.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I attended my first concert when I was seven years old – Cher and Cyndi Lauper at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Even at such a young age, it amazed me that 20,000+ complete strangers all had one thing in common that night, which was their love for an artist. People of all different races, cultures and backgrounds were singing along to the same songs. I knew from that point on that I wanted to work in the music industry.
After graduating from Marist College with my B.A. in Communications & Public Relations, I made the move to Nashville in 2015 and worked for a company that I thought was my dream job. After being put in an unethical situation, I unexpectedly quit and found myself very lost without a plan. After feeling sorry for myself for a few days, I was given some of the best advice of my life – open my own PR firm…and that’s just what I did! Anchor Publicity was born in 2016 and it’s one of my biggest accomplishments to date.
PR is the perfect career choice for me. I am a very quiet and shy person by nature. I don’t like attention. Being a publicist allows me to be right in the middle of all of the action, but I am behind-the-scenes. I am in charge of making sure a client received positive press, I organize interviews and TV/radio appearances, create press kits, write press releases and professional biographies, monitor press coverage, etc. One of my favorite aspects of my job is when I can join my clients on tour and run meet & greets. There’s a lot of planning and scheduling involved, but I love it! I actually specialize in crisis management, which means I handle any “skeletons in the closet” moments. Sometimes that entails receiving a 3am phone call from TMZ, but it keeps me on my toes! I am definitely a workaholic and love what I do.
I’ve had the opportunity to work with over 100 different artists and my roster is consistently growing. I am always happy to meet for coffee to see if I can help in any way, so give me a call!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word-of-mouth has been the best source for me. I am very grateful to everyone who shares my name and passes my business cards around town. Leaving reviews on my website is also a big help!
Have you ever had to pivot?
When the Covid pandemic hit in 2020, the music industry was the first to shut down. Singers, songwriters, managers, booking agents, publicists, etc. all found themselves without an income. I started offering “pay what you can” services because I didn’t want anyone having to make the decision whether to pay their rent or release their music. I continued doing this well into 2021 and still have no regrets!
