We recently connected with Colleen and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Colleen, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
At our spa, wellness is more than a service — it’s a relationship built on trust, care, and personal connection. We pride ourselves on creating an experience where every guest is known by name, remembered by preference, and welcomed like family. Thoughtful touches — such as reserving a favorite locker, offering a supportive pillow, or accommodating unique needs with genuine warmth — distinguish our approach. We are especially honored to care for guests navigating the early stages of dementia and Alzheimer’s, providing a familiar, comforting environment that helps preserve precious memories and dignity. While caregivers take a well-deserved moment for themselves, they do so with confidence, knowing their loved one is in compassionate hands. At our spa, every detail is designed with intention — because here, you are never just a guest. You are family.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am co-owner and general manager of the Woodhouse Spa in Gainesville, Virginia. Passionate about the importance of self-care, our spa offers a range of treatments for guests, including massages, hot stone therapy, deep tissue massages, body treatments, scrubs and facials. We also provide specialized services, such as lymphatic massage for improved circulation, which is especially beneficial for post-surgical patients. All highly educated and certified in their field, our team has extensive experience in the human body, helping clients feel better physically and emotionally.
Joining my husband, Walter Kuhn, who is also part-owner of the Woodhouse Spa – Gainesville and a U.S. Navy veteran, I sought to provide a safe and welcoming environment by focusing on quality customer service and personalized experiences for every guest to ensure a memorable visit. Catering to a diverse clientele, my ultimate goal is to guarantee a five-star experience that leaves every client leaving Woodhouse Spa – Gainesville feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. In addition to providing one-on-one services, we can accommodate small groups to celebrate birthdays and other special events. We also work closely with the military by giving pre-deployment treatments and recovery services upon their return from combat or following an injury. We also offer services to individuals before entering hospice, including manicures and pedicures, so they can look and feel their best.
Besides our commitments to our loyal guests, we strive to foster an exceptional culture at the spa so that every employee feels appreciated.
Prior to the spa industry, I worked in law for 30 years in various capacities for corporate and private law firms, plaintiffs, personal injury, and within the New York County for Surrogate’s Courts and in Chambers. I have worked extensively with very prominent families and executives throughout my career.
I am a member of the Prince William Chamber of Commerce and am involved in various nonprofit initiatives. We are also active through the Woodhouse Spa – Gainesville, frequently collaborating with local nonprofits and groups to give back. Among these initiatives, we invite Santa Claus to visit each year and encourages residents to donate, where all proceeds go to the Prince William County Humane Society for Animals. We also partner with Willing Warrior in Haymarket, Virginia, by offering complimentary services to veterans, active military personnel, and their caretakers by providing 50-minute body balance massages and the opportunity to stay in one of her private suites to relax and de-stress.
Our Woodhouse Spa – Gainesville has become highly regarded for its exceptional services and has received numerous positive Google reviews. Our spa has also been featured in various local magazines, including Middleburg Magazine, Prince William Living Magazine, Haymarket-Gainesville Lifestyle Magazine and the 2024 Faces of Culpepper Magazine.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Opening our spa during the uncertainty of the pandemic was a true test of resilience — and a promise to our community that safety, care, and well-being would always come first. We built our spa with purpose, installing UV filtration systems in all air handlers, placing individual UV sanitizers in every treatment room, and arranging seating to ensure every guest felt comfortable and protected. We sourced hospital-grade cleaners, a standard we proudly maintain to this day. Every decision we made then, and every standard we uphold now, reflects our unwavering belief: wellness thrives where people feel safe, valued, and genuinely cared for.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Throughout my professional journey, I have been fortunate to work under exceptional leadership and alongside incredible teams — experiences that have deeply shaped how we manage our spa today. We believe that true wellness begins within, and that means prioritizing the care and well-being of our team just as much as our guests. We focus on thoughtful scheduling to avoid burnout, ensuring no one is overbooked or overwhelmed, and that team members have time to recharge outside of work. Team building and time together outside the spa are important parts of our culture, as is maintaining a positive, supportive environment free of negative energy. When our team feels healthy, supported, and passionate about what they do, it reflects directly in the extraordinary care our guests receive — because doing what you love, and loving where you do it, is at the heart of everything we stand for.
