We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Colin Krieger a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Colin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
I’d say it’s investing in our community. My wife and I had always thrown parties at our home as long as we’ve been together. When I got into real estate, we started inviting everyone- and I mean everyone – to our parties. The inside party turned into a backyard party, then into a block party, eventually becoming fundraisers for local charities. We were meeting new people, and helping both my business and our town at the same time. The energy and love we received from the community over the last ten years has been amazing. We now invest the bulk of our advertising dollars in the community- through organizing and sponsoring events, to buying ads at local sports parks.
“If you give it out in slices, it comes back in loaves”
Colin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Born and raised in New Orleans, I spent his formative years in the Crescent City working in the restaurant business and restoring dilapidated homes. My wife Desiree and Imade the move to the Columbus area shortly after Hurricane Katrina, and have never looked back. We have become actively involved in the community, acting as advocates for small business owners and organizing charitable events. We live in a historic Victorian home in downtown Columbus and have three lovely daughters, Allison, Katie, and Julie.
My approach to buying or selling your home is simple: no pressure, no rush, no problem. I like to say I combine blue-collar work ethic with a passion for improvement. Communication is paramount. For sellers, I offer innovative, attention-getting marketing, with a dominant presence in local social media. My blog, Good for Business with Colin Krieger, is the leading media outlet that promotes local businesses and workers.
I have been fortunate enough to the top-selling residential agent in our MLS the last 3 years, and have been awarded Best Realtor, Best Community Volunteer, and Local Hero by our newspaper several times. I think my business is a direct result of the lives I have touched and the efforts I have made to make this city a better place to live.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I had some extended time to talk with Social Media “guru” Gary Vaynerchuk at a conference when I was just starting in Real Estate. He shared with me the best strategy I still share with others today. “Be the Social Mayor of your town”. By consistently postings, sharing and propping up other people, businesses, and events- over time, you will garner trust and attention in your market. I would encourage anyone starting out in any business to promote their community relentlessly. Make sure to keep the camera pointed at others, and you will become more well known than you could imagine,
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had spent my formative years working in the food service industry, including several years in ownership and management. I left to invest in a media company in 2010. While it was going well, it was not as interesting or lucrative and I had planned, I had a quick exit/break from the business in 2014, and really didn’t know which direction to go. Like any good husband, I fortunately listened to my wife. Even though it wasn’t on my short list of career choices, she suggested real estate. I had always been interested in it, but it didn’t seem like an obvious choice for me. Even though the market was quite slow at the time, it was the best decision I’ve ever made( next to marrying her, of course)
