We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Colin Dale. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Colin below.
Colin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
This is a tough one. Lately, I’ve almost wished that I had started later, because as a young person it’s difficult to get people in the film industry to take you seriously. But I think — when everything is said and done — I will be glad that I started my creative career when I did. I started young, and to me this path is a vocation. The same way that priests or monks see their path as a vocation: that’s how I view my commitment to filmmaking.
Colin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a writer/director, simply put. I’ve been practicing this craft since I was a teenager, and I’ve begun to make a living at it in the last few years. I direct scripted narratives (films), unscripted narratives (documentaries), music videos, and commercials. I direct my own projects, but I also work as a director-for-hire. Additionally, I work as a writer-for-hire, writing scripts for directors, producers, etc.
As a writer/director, there are a few things that set me apart. I have an obsessive and relentless attention to detail. I’m also a top-notch writer, which means that telling a great story is of paramount importance to me at all times; I never lose sight of that. What that means is that my projects — whether they’re personal projects or commissioned — look and sound impeccable, AND more importantly tell a great story.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Absolutely. I want to be a filmmaker that’s a household name. I want to be known as one of the premiere cinematic voices of my generation.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Getting to mine deep below the surface of life. As an artist, you don’t have to take anything at face value. You can search endlessly for truth and knowledge.
