Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cole Hewett. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cole, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I started bass fishing at a young age and I’ve dedicated my entire life to making it into a profitable venture. I fished 3 years in college at UCF where I not only qualified for multiple national championships, but learned a lot of the business side of fishing. Since graduating college I’ve started fishing the Major League Fishing series and pro tour for the past 2 years. Since the transition to the pro level I’ve altered my goals into trying to prepare myself to become the most successful tournament angler of my generation, not just from a financial sense but from a statistical sense based on finishes. I’ve been fortunate to record 2 pro level top tens in the last two years, and this year I took in a little over $35k. Next year will be going into my 3rd year of competitive events and I have set my sights to try and become a champion this year. This year I will be fishing the full MLF invitationals as well as some of the MLF series events as well.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started fishing at a very young age with my Dad, and Grandfather. This turned into the hobby of tournament fishing at the local level. Once I went to college at UCF in Orlando, Florida, I discovered my passion from a competitive sense and local events no longer satisfied my desire to compete. After college I transitioned to the MLF series and Pro Tour.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
During my first year traveling the country full time I went several events in a row before cracking the top 50 and then being able to make a top 10 and compete to win an event.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Fishing tournaments is very difficult to make money without imputing a lot of capital upfront. Having to find a way to make money to be able to afford each event just helps push me harder to do well once the event starts. At only the age of 22 when I started these events, I had to compete against older more seasoned anglers that had much deeper pockets than mine. The only way I found to do well was to out work, practice more and fight for every inch in those events.
