We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Coffee & Cream a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Coffee & Cream, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
People always mix us up. They call Cream, Coffee and they call Coffee, Cream. But Cream is Cream and Coffee is Coffee. That’s like getting peanut butter and jelly mixed up. It’s easy to remember who is who if you think about it. Coffee is the dark and bruting one, who is diligent and task-oriented. Whereas Cream is quite the kooky fellow, who doesn’t quite play by the book!
All in all, it is what it is. We don’t mind it too much, since we function as a unit. We share toothpaste, clothes, a bed, floss, Reddit accounts, and a girlfriend. I guess you could call us: Coffee & Cream. (But don’t mix us up again ever)
Coffee & Cream, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello! We are Coffee & Cream, a rap duo from Cleveland, OH. We were born in the same city (by different wombs), and we formed a brotherly connection at a young age. We both developed a strong passion for music, especially since we were always watching The Reading Rainbow (that theme song though?). From there, LeVar Burton inspired us to go off and create our own music! When we were preteens we wrote our first song ‘Cheese and Potaters’. It was an instant hit amongst our fans (friends), but caused controversy in the underground rap scene (the song was never recorded or released). From there, album by album, we slowly but surely developed our signature sound, which is showcased best in our newest album: LUBA; which is an album that celebrates our life-long friendship.
We believe what sets us apart is our ability to get inspiration from anything. After all, we have written songs about hunting pizzas, dying (we are alive and well), bagpipes, and the 1984 arcade classic: Tetris. To us, music has no boundaries. To us…everything is music; and to music…everything is us.
Check us out on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, etc. if you want to enjoy a truly unique musical experience.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
To us, the most rewarding thing is seeing the faces of our fans as we perform the best songs they’ve ever heard. The smiles, the laughs, and the tears make us remember why we do what we do. That is why we are so fond of performing live, since it gives us a platform to witness our fans’ enjoyment firsthand. We understand that our fans enjoy our digital music immensely, but there is something about us being on-stage that unlocks something primal in our fans.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
We are also driven by our love for the environment. Which is why ALL Coffee & Cream songs are renewable, carbon neutral, vegan, and mostly digital. Remember to recycle!
