We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cody Renegar. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cody below.
Hi Cody, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
When I was 26, I sold everything I owned, bought a plane ticket to L.A., and left my home in Northwest Arkansas, with the very high hopes of working with celebrities and A-listers someday. I’ve never been one to aim low, so I put together my resume and only sent it to the best of the best, Jose Eber. I got the job, and a private room in a Beverly Hills salon with a window overlooking Rodeo Drive. I did end up moving back to Arkansas for a bit to raise my son, but I eventually came back to L.A. to finish what I started, and now I’m here doing exactly what I dreamed of!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
When I was in junior high, my class would take field trips to nursing homes to visit with and entertain the residents. I loved getting to know them so much that I kept it up on my own after graduating high school. One of the ladies there asked me what I wanted to do for a career, but I hadn’t quite figured it out yet. So she told me to write down everything I wanted out of a job, and out of life, keep the list in my pocket and to pull it out whenever I heard of a job, so that’s what I did. One day I was getting a haircut and going over my list, and realized I wanted to be a barber, so I drove straight to the barber school to enroll.
I specialize in hair cuts, colors, and blow outs. I love making people feel beautiful, and I think what sets me apart is that I’m so passionate about making others feel their best, that it’s instilled a kind of intuition for knowing exactly what a client needs, even if they don’t know it yet. But with that being said, I want my clients to know that we are a team and we make the decisions together. I listen. I think a lot of stylists don’t truly listen to their clients about what they want, so I always want to make sure I fully have their trust before doing anything. I want everyone to leave my chair with a smile on their face and feeling amazing, on the inside as well as the outside.
I’m so proud of the life long connections I’ve made with so many of my clients. It’s a hard feat to maintain these beautiful relationships for going on 30 years, but the life lessons, the connections, and the friendships I’ve developed with all of these amazing people in my chair are absolutely priceless, and are the best part of what I do.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal for my creative journey is to never get complacent, always be bettering myself, to keep learning and growing, in all aspects.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I think I had to be extremely resilient when I was writing my book. Putting down those personal struggles, and traumas, and reliving those experiences again was scary and it brought up a lot of emotion, but I knew the story needed to be told, so I pushed thru and persevered. Now there’s a movie and a musical based on the book, I’ve had so many people reach out to tell me how the book has inspired them, and everything seems to be working out beautifully.
