We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cody Rager. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cody below.
Alright, Cody thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
When we started Rager Fencing, my wife and I had a 1 year old and my wife was in college. I had quit my full time job at a factory because I wasn’t seeing my child very much working nights and she was trying so hard maintaining everything. I had always been around fencing so I thought to take the risk. At first we were very scared and nervous but had we not taken that first risk then we wouldn’t be where we are today.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a third generational fencing company owner – however my grandfather and father passed away before I could take over the business ultimately it dissolved. My wife and I decided to restart the business from ground zero. We started solely going to offer fencing – wood fencing. My wife wanted to take our son to the beach so we started offering additional services being lawn care. Offering fencing and landscaping/lawn care kept the first year balanced as it was our slowest year. By year 2 we were doing all types of fencing styles, and landscaping. When we arrive at an estimate we look around for exterior projects that we could help with, even if we are only there at first for a fence. Engaging with customers in looking for additional projects, it up sales our work and brings more home value and curb appeal – which sets our business apart from others. We are very proud of everything that was built due to coming from nothing and simply building the company to where we are today.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
On the 4th of July in our first years – two of our company trucks were bashed in by juveniles with rocks and boulders. Being a small business owner this took a hit to our company. Not having very much up front out of pocket money to spend on rentals and waiting on insurance to assist – it was straining. Without resilience, determination and faith our business would have went under.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is something that is built over time. It’s not going to push your content out within the first week or even the first year. It’s something you have to work on daily. Eventually you will build a platform through recommendations or reviews where others will follow. Never giving up and staying consistent is the key.
