We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cody Hamilton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cody below.
Cody, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
We were living in Austin, TX working in the advertising industry and felt an urge to do something different and more connected with community. My parents had moved back to Wyoming near where I had grown up and we went out to visit and see if opening a specialty coffee shop in the middle of nowhere was what was next for us. After a few days we had seen a great location but had concerns on whether it would actually work or if people would think we were crazy. We went back to Austin and put the idea on hold. My wife’s auto immune disease flared up really bad and she got really sick, also my father’s business partner from their coffee shop in Missouri passed away unexpectedly. Seeing his impact on the community their shop had and the thousands of people that came to honor his memory had us thinking about our industry and how if something happened to us people would be going after our clients instead. So we decided to go all in and make the leap of faith on this wild idea of opening a special coffee shop in the last real frontier.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
“Seriously Fun Coffee”. That is one of our tag lines we use. Coffee is so complex and unique but it is also fun. We take what we do very seriously but don’t want to come off snobby. We source some of the most unique coffees we can find and look intentionally for ones that make you question what coffee can taste like. AS we grow we strive to provide an experience and break down ideas of what coffee is. I like to say that we showcase what coffee can be not what it has been. We work directly with some of the most innovative farms that experiment with unique ways of processing the coffee.
Have you ever had to pivot?
When COVID hit everyone was scrambling and working on finding out how to keep their businesses going. We quickly pivoted to work on increasing our ecommerce end of the business. We offered free shipping throughout all of the lockdowns. For our wholesale accounts that didn’t have the revenue coming in we offered codes for their customers to use on our site and they would then get a percent of the sale to help offset the closures. Through this our e-commerce grew 1,000% that year and has continued a steady growth since. We also found a German Firetruck and converted it into one of the coolest mobile coffee shops you could imagine. It went on to win an award at the Specialty Coffee Expo that year.
Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?
Over the years we have diversified our business revenue streams. After our first year being open we started roasting. Shortly after that we began our ecommerce and wholesale followed a year later by adding subscription service as well. These all helped our business as we are in a very season town that gets most of its business in 3 months of the year. About a year ago we also were given the opportunity to open a second location in Boise, ID. Our thoughts with this cafe was to get exposure in a large market and to have a cafe in a more stable economy throughout the year. I am also working on a project where I have been designing a prototyping some new coffee machines that we hope to launch soon as well!
