We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Codie Cunningham a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Codie, thanks for joining us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
Wow, It all started back when I was in grade school. I got a 110 camera with 110 MM film. Back then this film was dropped off at a photo or drugstore to be developed. I got a big kick of what a camera did, and how it could be used if you were creative. I went on a couple of school field trips in downtown St.Louis were one was setup on a tour to take photos. I got my photos back from developing along with the Black & White negatives (I’m showing my age now) and was hooked ever since. Time moving Forward I always loved photography but never seriously nurtured this interest until later in life. I’ve taken photos of friends and places I visited as I got older and in High School, but that’s as far as I went with it. In 2015 I joined the media ministry at my church and that’s when I realized I had a eye for photography. Through this I also learned videography ( New love and talent Unlocked). A few months after I joined the media ministry I got my first camera, I’ve upgraded since, but I still have my original camara. After about a year of training I was put in charge of the social media content for the ministry. Through experience, trial & error I decided to work on being a professional in this field and doing it full time for myself. Working at this full time is a challenge, but it opens opportunities to be creative for your clients and for your creative expression.
Codie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Codie Cunningham, Photographer/Videographer of Imagination to Innovation LLC.
I got into this industry because of the love and creativity that is possible to make into reality through photo and video. Weather it’s portrait, landscaping, auto, nature, travel, textures, advertising, marketing, or social media. The results and opportunities are endless. I am proud of being able to bring out what a client has as an idea in their minds. To be able to create it, and put it into visuals as a photo, video, advertisement, ect.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Starting out when making and editing videos. I wasn’t aware of the many resources available for quality high resolution photos and video clips. I was used to doing this on my own. Taking Every shot and finding separate audio and sound effects took Major time in completing projects. Today depending on the project or client I use Both. I Never like to only depend on One source. It’s like learning to drive a manual automobile then switching to an automatic. If the automatic is unavailable
and you never driven a manual, you won’t be able to get to your destination.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When working on earlier projects I would have a particular sound effect or cinematic music I needed for various videos. I would search different website databases and their Entire Catalog until I found what I was looking for. Music, Sound Effects, and Transitions MUST Match Up Perfectly in order to move and enlighten the viewer. Whether It’s telling a story, being inspirational, or selling a product.
