We were lucky to catch up with Cocky McFly recently and have shared our conversation below.
Cocky, appreciate you joining us today. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
I’ll never forget it. I got my start hosting poetry open mics here in the city of Jackson. I had no clue what I was doing, and I really was just hoping I could get in front of the right crowd to show off my talents. I got that opportunity doing a benefit gala for a doctor here in the city. I was so excited that I did it for free. After the show, he praised me for how well I did a slid a “little something” in my pocket. It was $200. The most I’d had ever earned as an artist. 15 years later… I’m still getting to do this… I’ll forever be thankful for that night!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Honestly, I got my start because I just needed a creative outlet. I started doing lots of hosting/comedy gigs. Once I built my following and network I transitioned over to management and creating the events. That has allowed me to learn so much over the years, good and bad, and in 2021 I created the “Vibe Controllers” brand. It’s really the best thing that I’ve ever done and what makes it really special is that I get to do it with my twin brother. This brand encompasses all of the values that are important to me: family, community, culture, laughter, and of course.. the vibes!
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
My favorite book is Atomic Habits by James Clear. It literally changed the way I think and do things. I removed habits and created systems that help me accomplish my goals. I suggest it to any and everyone!

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Honestly, I think it’s one of the things I’ve always struggled with. Being “public with my purpose”. Especially being a very private person it’s hard to get out of that comfort zone and constantly post to advertise your brand/product. I did lots of reading and research on how to expand and get more eyes on my brand and I started posting non-stop daily!! lol…
Also, the old school method of word of mouth always works. Wearing a t-shirt that speaks to the brand or posting stickers here and there always help.
