Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cochrane Williams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cochrane, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
My ultimate goal is to create a legacy of never-ending progress and commitment to whatever creative endeavor I engage in. Along with her mom Kemi, we help our daughter to understand herself and push the limits of her own creative ability, we hope to instill these ideals in her. I hope she will use this information to realize her own greatness.
Cochrane, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
A few years after high school, I enlisted in the army and did not return to my creative pursuits until a year after being discharged at the age of 24. I began freelancing and it became my primary source of income, providing creative services such as photo portraits and commissioned illustrations. The market became oversaturated with photographers around the time when digital cameras became more affordable. This drastically drove down the prices a photographer or a creative consultant could charge for services, so in 2013 I took a boot camp course to pursue a career in tech. I still freelance and provide creative work for clients, and enjoy the challenge of working with them.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to overcome the belief that opportunities are limited and that one’s moment has passed. Throughout my career, I have missed out on opportunities due to a lack of preparation and unforeseen circumstances. However, I have come to realize that opportunities are not finite. As long as one is proactive in honing their skills, making informed creative choices, and maintaining discipline, opportunities will always present themselves. The key is to always be ready for them and never give up.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most satisfying part of my experience is seeing individuals whom I mentored in the past, come back to me and express how I helped them shape their approach and even enter into their chosen creative profession. As someone who was mentored and had my own mindset shaped by the guidance of my mentors, I understand the value of having a solid foundation to build upon. I am forever grateful to all those who have mentored me and it’s an honor to be able to pay it forward.
