Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Coby Sultan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Coby, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Yes and no. My choices in life have all lead me to where I am today and i am just as proud of my decision to pursue soccer as a career as I am of my decision to take a step away from it after 3 years playing in Europe. My path to the present has been unique to say the least, and has allowed me to pursue my current creative career by presenting me with experiences to write about that are unique to me. On the other hand, I do wish I had gotten into music sooner in life. I have a natural talent for the art form that could have been furthered had I taken it more seriously and/or practiced it when I was younger.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an artist, athlete, educator, and movement practitioner based in Washington, DC.
In 2018, I moved to the Netherlands, where he pursued a career in professional soccer and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Sciences at the University of Maastricht. After taking a step away from soccer in 2021, I fully immersed himself in writing and creating music, and teaching yoga, breathwork, and cold water immersion therapy.
By combining my strong desire for growth, knowledge acquisition, and human optimization and his experience as a professional athlete, yoga teacher, breathing specialist, musician, and world traveller, Coby empowers high achieving people to connect deeper with themselves, push past their physiological limits, and heal their bodies.
I discovered a passion for music later in life after learning a few basic chords in his high school guitar class. When I moved to The Netherlands to pursue a career in professional soccer and study health sciences, I spent much of his time off the field writing music in my apartment. After enduring a number of life changing events, including taking a step away from soccer, breaking up with my first girlfriend, and graduating college, I retreated to a farm in Portugal where I was able to process this intense period. It was there that I began writing a series of songs for a project titled, ‘memories from your polaroids’ : a piercingly honest, and nostalgic EP that tells the story of my first relationship through the lens of her polaroid camera.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I dabble in a number of creative outlets including music, movement, and many others. I find there are two moments that are both extremely rewarding in their own way. The first is the moment a project is finished. The second is when people resonate deeply with it. In music, when a song is finished and after a concert, when an audience member tells me how deeply they connected with a particular song. In movement, when I achieve a a particular posture or understand a concept deeper, but also when I apply it to teaching my students, and they resonate with it, or it helps them feel better.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The best way to support creatives is by expressing creativity. Whatever that means to you. Creativity is an inherent part of being human. Many people frown upon it, especially when it takes. a significant amount of time. I have found that creatives generally have a lot more respect and show a lot more support for other creatives. There’s an deeper understanding and appreciation for a persons work, knowing how much time and energy has gone into something.
