We were lucky to catch up with Clyla Destiny recently and have shared our conversation below.
Clyla, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
I believe I was 9 or 10 years old. A family friend had a father who worked for the local tv station. He was shooting a commercial for a summer camp and needed a couple kids to be actors in the commercial. I made $50 and thought I was rich. I’ll never forget it. I remember thinking wow I just got paid to have fun!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was blessed with pretty dynamic parents that passed along alot of talents. There’s not a specific thing that I do. I’m involved in various mediums of the creative process’ of artistic expression dance, painting, acting, singing, writing, producing, directing and the list goes on. I make and sell soap and I create dope clothes and I throw amazing events. And whatever else in between goes with that. I’m very hands on in my approach to expression. I help, support, and inspire others to be fully expressed. I want to see the people around me experience the desires of their heart and live life FULL OUT!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I drove across the country just me and vmy turtle and moved to the west coast from NYC. When I moved to NYC 5 years prior I had negative $500 in my pocket and made that drive from FL-NYC. Really it’s no excuses. Just go fly. There’s a lot more to these stories but we’ll save the long version for the sitdown. Ya gotta hear me tell it with all the animation because hunny let me tell you God did his Big One and I’m still waiting to reap harvest on the seeds that have been sown throughout the journey. I don’t know if “resilience” is the world cuz I have felt defeat many times. I’m irrational and I have a phenomenal support system. I wont take no for an answer and when I want to quit my tribe won’t let me. My mom is a mega example of that for me. I’ve watched that woman pick up and restart so many times. It’s inspiring. She mixed a lot of courage in the pot when she was cooking me.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Study the business side of things. Everything is not what it seems and unfortunately you can’t trust everybody. Know your value because everyone is trynna save money and make money and you can end up being a casualty on their way to higher heights. If you’re a creative I know you want to focus on the creating but show business is a BUSINESS. Set yourself up to win based on the level of success you hope to reach. READ YOUR CONTRACTS and google words and terms you don’t know until you understand. Protect yourself and your gifts. Ask for help.
