We were lucky to catch up with Clover Haugerud recently and have shared our conversation below.
Clover, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
Although I’m happy with how things turned out, and I’m not one to “wish” for different outcomes or get caught up in past thinking. I do believe that something most people could benefit from is JUST STARTING even when they don’t feel ready. So while I wouldn’t go back and change the past- that is something I’ve learned and implement moving forward. I start even when I don’t feel 100% ready. I learn through DOING instead of trying to learn everything before I start. It’s impossible to succeed without failing. It’s impossible to create perfection on your first try. You will learn and grow in ways you could have never anticipated by simply doing the thing.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My passion for natural health and wellness started to blossom when I was in middle school. I was put on adderall for ADD and was having all sorts of awful side effects from the medication. I went to a naturopath, got off the adderall, started taking supplements for my deficiencies, cut out foods I was allergic to, and felt a WORLD of difference. From that point on, I was hooked. The next major turning point in my life occurred when I started college. I was sexually assaulted, dropped out, and moved back into my parent’s home. I was having severe panic attacks from the assault, and was extremely depressed. I felt like I would never be happy again and my entire life became about finding a way to heal. After several months at home, going to counseling, doing yoga, and experimenting with fasting, I felt ready to be on my own again. I still had a long way to go, but I had the strength to do it alone. I started working on farms all around the US- connecting with nature and finding healing in the earth. After several months of this, I decided to leave the country and work on a cacao farm in Costa Rica. From there, I continued to travel for the next two years- going to a total of 19 different countries. During my travels, I studied and experimented with healing modalities and medicines from all different cultures- things like Kambó (frog medicine) in Central America, and San Pedro Cactus in South America. When I came back to the US, I finished my degree in Biology and Integrative health and I got my certification in Health coaching.
Now, I teach a women’s health course online and run women’s retreats around the world. Part of my specialization is genetic testing- I believe that understanding our genes is KEY to understanding our bodies- what to feed them, how to take care of them. EVERYBODY is so different, so getting your genes tested and having a practitioner break down what they mean and what you should do about it is truly life changing. At our retreats, we incorporate health and wellness too- we cook healthy foods for our guests, practice yoga and meditation daily together, and oftentimes offer health focused workshops. Some workshops we’ve done in the past include- non toxic candle making, nutrition and cooking classes, self love hypnosis, visualization and manifestation, etc.
My mission is truly to uplift women and remind them of their immense beauty and power. Sometimes the world can feel like a scary place for women, and I think it is so crucial that we start treating one another as sisters again. That we support one another, protect one another… that we believe in the value of the feminine. Softness is not weak, it is strong. Our value is not in our appearance, but our hearts. Our strength is immeasurable, and is amplified by our unity. For a long time, there has been an attack on the feminine. Women have been convinced that we need to become more like men in order to be valued, in order to be successful. The truth is that our hormone cycle is completely different than that of a man. For a man, putting a lot of stress on the body can be healthy- they can handle a lot more stress than we can without negative health consequences. Women need to adjust the amount of stress they’re putting on their bodies depending on the phase of their menstrual cycle that they’re in. During our luteal phase, especially the week before our period- we are more sensitive to stress. The “hustle all day everyday” culture was NOT created for women (at least not from a health perspective). At this point in time, I think women are starting to wake up to our innate value. We don’t need to DO more or BE more to be worth something. I want to bring women back into a place of feeling safe- in their bodies, in their relationships, in their connection to themselves, and that is ultimately what all of my work is about.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think the number one thing to focus on is providing VALUE. The issue with many businesses is that their primary focus is on making money- on how they can GET more instead of on how they can GIVE more to their customers. We’ve had so many clients at our retreats sign up again immediately after completing their first retreat, not only that but after each retreat we get a influx of new applications from all of their friends! Building a community based off of return customers and referrals is a lot easier than trying to get brand new clients every time you sell a service.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn a lot of limiting beliefs around money. I grew up in a home that was pretty frugal. We always had what we NEEDED, but not necessarily what we WANTED. We were taught that “money doesn’t grow on trees” and is not an unlimited or abundant resource. I read some books that really helped me reframe this- one of them being You Are a Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who struggles with their mindset around money! I used to think that money was the root of all evil, now I understand that money is simply a vehicle. If a drunk driver got into an accident and killed someone else on the road, you wouldn’t blame the car, you’d blame the driver.
