We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Clint Richardson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Clint below.
Clint, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The Auburn Uniform Database is dedicated to documenting the aesthetic history of Auburn University athletics. It started during the summer after my freshman year at Auburn. I had seen many photos of Auburn Men’s Basketball players wearing radically different uniforms than anything I had ever seen before. But photos and documentation of the early-2000s teams was difficult to come by. To fulfill my own curiosity of what the team uniforms looked like, the Auburn Basketball Uniform Database was born.
The site quickly evolved into all of Auburn Athletics and has blossomed to featuring over 200 seasons of uniforms across football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, and even the marching band. The AUD showcases many aspects of Auburn’s aesthetic history, going into excruciating detail to explain every feature and every change across the decades of sports uniforms.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always enjoyed design – seeing how logos have changed over time or dissecting a sports team’s new uniforms. When the Auburn Uniform Database began, it quickly showed how much there was to tackle. Many aspects of this niche had been misinterpreted, misinformed, or fallen to the wayside over time. If Auburn was to embrace its history, it was important to know its history. And that includes everything down to the uniforms.
It’s easy to talk about uniforms – in fact, that’s what makes it so enjoyable. Everyone has an opinion and a thought, whether they think it’s an important aspect or silly entirely. What sets the AUD apart is the dedication and attention to detail. The site has been around for nearly a decade at this point and there’s still so much more to dive into and research.
I’m proud of the work with the Auburn Uniform Database. It’s been positioned to be the expert source of Auburn uniforms.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The end goal of the Auburn Uniform Database is to have a complete catalog of historic Auburn Athletic uniforms, across every sport. The site is missing the first 40 years of football uniforms, where photographs and detailed descriptions of the team uniforms are difficult to come by. Eventually, I hope that you can find every single uniform ever worn by each Auburn Tigers team to date. That’s the ultimate goal.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
It’s really been built over years of bringing quality, interesting content to the table. While many believe Auburn uniforms go unchanged each year (especially in football), there are many more tweaks and overhauls than they think. Bringing each of those unique differences to attention is exciting and interesting for many readers.
I always say that “no detail is too small” to care about – and it’s true. Whether Auburn wears orange or green jerseys, changes the decals on the chinstraps, or even decides to wear a new USA Flag decal on the helmets with a raised profile – it all matters and it’s all worth sharing. There are people that care, especially those that put in the work to make the changes.
