It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?

As the owner of Clifford’s Junk Removal, my journey has been a unique blend of entrepreneurship and military service. Starting this business while serving in the Air Force was a challenge, but it was also incredibly rewarding. My time in the Air Force taught me discipline, resilience, and the importance of a strong work ethic, all of which have been invaluable in running my own business.

Transitioning to the Air Force Reserves allowed me to continue serving my country while also dedicating more time to growing my business. There have been times when I wondered what it might be like to have a regular job, with more predictable hours and perhaps less stress. However, the satisfaction of building something from the ground up, the freedom to make my own decisions, and the ability to impact my community through my business make the challenges worthwhile.

One vivid memory stands out from early in my entrepreneurial journey. I was juggling my Air Force duties and the demands of a starting a business. There were nights with little sleep and days filled with relentless work. During one particularly tough week, I thought about the stability a regular job might offer. But then I received a heartfelt thank-you note from a client whose home we had helped clear out. That moment reminded me why I chose this path. The ability to serve others in a different capacity, to provide jobs in my community, and to create a legacy through Clifford’s Junk Removal reaffirmed my choice.

Additionally I think about my time in the Air force and how I did not have control over the out come and sucess of the organization. While I can influence change it is limited. With owning my own business the outcome directly connected to desictions and effort that are made by me. This may be the best and the worst thing about being an business owner

Ultimately, the balance of my military service and business ownership provides a sense of fulfillment that a regular job might not. Each day brings its own set of challenges and rewards, and I’m proud of the path I’ve chosen.

I grew up in a family of hard workers and am the son of a contractor. Naturally, hard work and manual labor have always come easily to me. Although I didn’t initially follow in my father’s footsteps, life eventually brought me full circle.

In 2021, while fixing up a rental property I had purchased, I encountered various construction materials that needed to be hauled away. After contacting local junk removal companies and being surprised by the high quotes I received, I decided to rent a dump trailer and haul the items off myself. It was then that I realized there was a market for this service. I believed I could provide a customer experience that would set me apart from the competition, and thus, Clifford’s Junk Removal was born. The business is named after my father, with whom I share a name.

My journey into this industry is deeply intertwined with my military service. I served in the Air Force during the startup phase of my business and later transitioned to the Air Force Reserves, where I continue to serve today. My military background has instilled in me values of discipline, dedication, and resilience, which I bring to my business every day. As a proud veteran, I am committed to serving my community with the same dedication and integrity that I have demonstrated in my military career.

Starting Clifford’s Junk Removal required creativity, resourcefulness, and a lot of hard work. The initial capital to kickstart the business came from a combination of personal savings and my earnings from working a second job while serving in the Air Force Reserves. Balancing multiple responsibilities was tough, but my military background equipped me with the discipline and perseverance needed to manage it all.

To minimize costs, I rented equipment when necessary and prioritized essential purchases. The income from the business was carefully reinvested to gradually expand our capabilities and services. Each successful job provided the funds needed for further growth, allowing us to maintain a minimal debt operation.

By working tirelessly and strategically reinvesting the earnings, Clifford’s Junk Removal has grown steadily. I’m proud of the journey and the hard work that went into building this business from the ground up, reflecting my commitment to providing exceptional customer experiences and making a positive impact on our community.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

Starting Clifford’s Junk Removal was just the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey. There was a pivotal moment early on when I had to make a significant shift to ensure the business’s growth and sustainability.

Initially, I focused solely on residential junk removal, targeting homeowners who needed help clearing out unwanted items. However, I soon realized that limiting myself to this market was not enough to sustain the business in the long term. Competition was fierce, and I needed to find a way to stand out and expand my services.

Around that time, a local business approached me with a request to clear out a large amount of commercial debris from a renovation project. This opportunity made me rethink my strategy and consider the potential of the commercial market. I decided to pivot and expand my services to include commercial junk removal. This decision opened up new avenues for growth and allowed me to diversify my client base.

To make this transition successful, I reached out to local businesses to offer my services. Although we are still a small operation, the pivot paid off, and soon we were handling both residential and commercial junk removal, which significantly boosted our revenue and market presence.

This experience taught me the importance of being adaptable and open to new opportunities. It reinforced the idea that sometimes, a strategic pivot is necessary to stay competitive and thrive in the ever-changing business landscape.
