We recently connected with Clemesha Pruitt and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Clemesha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I come from a very low income residential city named Centreville in the state of Illinois. Most would give the title E. Saint Louis, IL. Since I was a little girl I’ve always had big dreams and new that one day those dreams will come true. I grew up in a household with just my mother and two brothers. Our father passed away from suicide just when I was a baby. Over my 27 years of life I have watched my mother overcome many challenges including burying her oldest son this past January of 2022. The motivation, faith and confidence she has shown has been my reason why I want the life I deserve because it’s the life that she deserves. My mom had many dreams she could not reach because she had 3 children to raise. Our parents sacrifice so much to make sure our future is very promising that they’re willing to give up on their dreams and goals. We may not have had as much as many other kids but what we had was still grand and appreciative. The dreams my father and brother wanted, they could not reach those because their lives were short lived. The passion of my family is what pushes me, because we all want the same thing and that’s to make sure family is always taken care of. My mom is the story behind my mission.
Clemesha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello, I am Clemesha Pruitt for those that have never heard of me. I am 27 years old and I come from a small town called Centreville, IL. How I got into the industry is very small and brief, I started acting when I was just 5-7 years of age. My mom took me to my first casting call where I landed a bubblegum commercial in St. Louis, MO. As I had gotten older I participated in things such as drama club, advanced choir, African drum & dance etc. All of these things came from my talented parents. My father was one of the best break dancers, rappers and tag artists of E. Saint Louis as my mom did sports, dance and sang in her school choir. What sets me apart from others is my unique ability to be nothing other than myself. I strive to be the greatest version of myself and even when I reach that form I wish to be the greater version of that person. Acting is my number one passion and it is a feeling I can’t explain because it’s something I could do in my sleep. Many have to take the fundamentals of acting as I also had taken in college, but my professor told me I did not need it because I was a natural. Some gifts you are just born with! That’s when I moved to Atlanta’ to chase these dreams. One of the main things I would love for potential followers to know and understand is no dream is too small for you. No matter where you come from or how you were raised what is meant for you is for you only! Don’t let anyone deter you from that dream not even minor and major setbacks because God already has your life written you just have to follow, pray , have faith and live it!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn is that not everyone supports you and that is okay. Our minds have been altered so much of thinking that we must have major support from our family and friends. When in fact that is not true! You can reach any goal you want without the support of those you thought would be there. I use to cry so much about wanting support from my family and friends when I started my journey of heading towards becoming a great actress that it played a major part on my mental. The type of person I am, I support every person around me to those that I do not know. My mistake was thinking that people are like me and they are not but that is okay. The real support came from strangers, people I did not know that would motivate me and congratulate me on things I thought were too little to be congratulated. Now I have a lot of support from family and friends, and I am not saying all of my family and friends did not support me because that would be a lie. However, the support was more unreal than real. Meaning most hope for failure to they are secretly praying on your downfall than praying for your success. I have seen many make it without support of family and friends some of the biggest people in the industry. So if you are one to pout about support pray like I did , trust me God is the biggest supporter you need.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Everyone has those moments where we must “reset.” What I mean is sometimes we don’t know what we want in life because our goals are constantly changing or the paths we want to reach those goals change. I knew nothing but criminal Justice that’s all I knew because it’s what I received my degree in. Yet, this was not the path I needed to go down to reach my goals of becoming an actress and business owner. I realized I was wasting my time working in that field because I felt like I had too because I went to school for it. My accomplishment was going to school and getting my degree but nobody ever said I had to stick to that path. If you are not happy don’t settle, keep moving until you are on track. I switched my entire career field over to Marketing and Social Media marketing. I have to know how to market myself before trusting someone else to do that for me. No one knows you better than you know yourself so who would be better at marketing you. I am grateful I have made that shift, it was not easy but I love a challenge.
